    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a good internship programme, hard work, but enjoyable. I appreciated all of the great opportunities I was given to learn whilst also taking on real responsibilities.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was on a small team within the wider Finance Division, and everybody on that team was really friendly; they always made time to answer my queries.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager provided a lot of support, but I also had a 'buddy' and a 'mentor' who helped a lot. My 'buddy' was a member of my team who helped out on a day-to-day basis with quick questions, and my 'mentor' was from elsewhere in the Finance Division and provided guidance on longer term issues and career development,

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the beginning of the internship, I wasn't particularly busy, however as time went on and I began to work on more longer term tasks, I think that the workload struck a good balance.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibilities, particularly nearer the end of the internship. Though my team always reviewed my work before it got sent out, it was great that often my work was presented with only minor (if any) changes.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I definitely think that I developed skills which will help me in later life throughout the internship! I'd say that the most important skills weren't those directly learnt from training sessions though, as actually the most transferrable skills were more general (time management, communication etc.)

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My team were really friendly, and lovely people to work with. On a more general Firmwide level, everybody seemed to work hard and be quite focussed on their tasks, but still find time to have fun.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was extremely well organised. Nearer the start, the programme was quite structured by HCM, and we spent time away from our desks gaining insight into various departments within the firm and taking part in training. Later on, these sessions became less frequent which worked well as we then had a larger quantity of desk work to concentrate on.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was really impressed with the taining I recieved, and the time that people invested in ensuring that I understood everything I needed to in order to perform well. I really felt that the firm valued every single intern and was prepared to invest heavily in us all.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would love to work for the firm in the future, the culture is fantastic, and especially coming from a Federation side, rather than a traditional 'front-office' role, I feel that the respect that risk and control functions get within the firm is fantastic. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an offer!

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • All of the other interns within the Finance Division were nice, and we often went out for drinks or a meal together, so it was a lovely social scene, despite our heavy workloads.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living was expensive (especially rent!) but I lived really close to work, so that was to be expected... it's impossible to live cheaply in the centre of London. Socialising wasn't too expensive, especially if work finished early enough to catch happy hour at one of the bars near St Pauls.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Didn't really go out that often, but the nightlife seemed okay from what I have heard.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were sports teams etc. at the firm and outside of work, London is full of things to do, so there are endless opportunities to have fun depending on your workload and budget!
