The Role
I was the only placement student in the company, but I found I was able to quickly settle down and get involved in project work. There were many opportunities to develop professionally and gain various competences. There was a good mix of design work and testing, and working in the engineering workshop was always enjoyable. The placement was great and the work was always interesting.
My colleagues were easy to work with and available for any guidance, and my work on the project was valued.
I had plenty of support from my manager, with whom I had a monthly one-on-one to discuss my progress and development, as such I was able to make the most of my placement year.
There was a list of project deliverables; when one task was complete I could move on to the next. So there was always something to do. There was a good variety of technical work which enabled me to gain various engineering competences.
The amount of responsibility I was given increased as time passed and I proved my abilities to my project team. However, I was pleased that at the very start of my placement, although I was a student engineer, my abilities were not underestimated. I was in charge of managing my work time and resources.
The company's IMechE MPDS scheme was especially excellent. The department would hold quarterly MPDS progress seminars which I found very useful to improve my presentation skills, and also have some idea of how other developing engineers were progressing. There were project relevant training courses run throughout the year as well. The skills I have developed will definitely prove to useful for my final year at university and my professional life afterward.
The Company
Friendly
Very good. The tour of relevant areas of the company site was very insightful and strengthened my resolve to accept the placement.
The company's MPDS (Monitored Professional Development Scheme by the IMechE) was excellent. There was great support by the company mentor and technical training was provided.

Company Parties/Events
Elekta's graduate scheme looks very promising. The current graduates recommended the scheme as well.
The Culture
I was the only placement student at the company. However colleagues interact socially quite often.
I don't know first hand because I don't live in the area, but it appears quite good.
