    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My placement year at Advent IT was a fantastic year which I enjoyed immensely, I learnt and developed skills in testing, project management, time management and became a much more confident professional individual. The variety of projects and tasks I was involved in allowed me to experience all areas of software and exposure to lots of different exciting challenges. Being accountable for my own tasks and deadlines gave me a huge sense of achievement and responsibility.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From my first day at Advent IT I felt very much part of the team and valued. Throughout my year I received invaluable personal coaching, professional development and helping within the team to get the best out of one another. I had the opportunity throughout my time at Advent IT to spend time researching and implementing changes to processes or procedures to make things better for everybody - something that I found incredibly rewarding.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I received an indepth training plan from my first day which enabled me to get up to speed with the business and day to day activities very quickly. I found it very useful to have a mentor that supported me one to one throughout the whole training process - enabling me to ask any questions (without sounding silly!) and gain a better understanding of the whole business and tasks involved in the role. Weekly one to one meetings with my line manager allowed us to praise the previous weeks achievements and also discuss and address any weaknesses quickly. I found this one to one mentoring and development incredibly beneficial in my placement year, allowing me to take on feedback and consistently improve for the benefit of myself and Advent IT.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • During my year at Advent IT, I learnt the importance of being able to priortise tasks and manage my own workload which was fantastic practice for my final year at university. Every single day was a different challenge, alongside my task list, I had to ensure that I remained on top of technical support, any critical tasks that need to be undertaken as well as helping and supporting the team around me.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt that during my placement year I had the perfect amount of responsibility, I always felt challenged to make things happen and pushed to achieve and improve. Having the opportunity to help customers and hear their delight at solving a problem was very pleasing and made my year such a good experience.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • You know you've had a fantastic placement year when you return to university and are commented on your increased confidence, professionalism and desire to excel. Completing my placement year at Advent IT allowed me to pick my final year degree choices with ease - concentrating on areas I was comfortable with and having the confidence that I knew I could manage my time effectively. My professional skills achieved during my placement year at Advent IT helped me through interviews in my final year and onto my current graduate role.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • A friendly hard working office environment where everybody helped out each other, good sense of humour and an unlimited supply of good cups of tea!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • From my first day I had my workstation, training plan and tasks waiting for me which made me feel at ease and able to get stuck in straight away. My weekly one to ones with my line manager enabled me to give feedback and suggestions. Towards the end of my placement I was able to help with the recruitment of new placement students, overall recruitment strategy and the training of new employees to the business which gave me great satisifaction in knowing that we'd got the best people.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • My weekly one to one meetings with my line manager allowed me to express ideas and suggestions for improvement and my manager was only happy to help support me through this. I had an unlimited supply of any educational books I required and feedback on anything I'd completed when required. In terms of personal training and development it was second to none as it was so personable and everybody in the team was so willing to help each other develop.
