The Role
It was probably one of the best decisions that I've taken regarding my career. There could not have been a better start to it.
I was very well embedded into the team within a month of joining the company and I was always treated as family. I've made some very sound relationships with the people in my team and I'm still in touch with all of them and we meet up from time to time.
They were extremely patient with me in the beginning and tried to answer all the questions I threw at them. I never felt any lack of guidance or support during the year. My mentor made sure I had all the formal and informal training I needed and also helped me with my networking. I don't think I could've asked for a better team.
I was extremely busy on a daily basis but it was only because I had asked for all those projects and tasks. The team made sure I was never overwhelmed with work and offered all the help and guidance I needed when I was. At the same time though, I was very active sports-wise and socially with other employees and interns in the company so there was always a perfect balance and it made for a very exciting and fun year.
I was guided through the tasks and projects in the beginning after which I gradually started taking them on myself with very little help from the team. A lot of the projects I worked on were extremely important to the company and very large in scope. They definitely made me feel instrumental to the operations of the business unit. Basically, after about 2 months in, I wasn't treated like an intern but a normal employee. 'Nuff said.
I have developed surprisingly large number of skills in just a year and the technical training has been very sound and has already helped me get another brilliant job. There couldn't have been a better start to my career. I learned some of the most valuable lessons in an extremely dynamic and large corporate environment and it has definitely helped me decide what I want to do with my career and which direction to take.
The Company
A healthy, positive, fun, exciting and challenging atmosphere with some quality banter thrown in.
It was very well organized, especially with regards to the buddy/mentoring system and there was more than adequate training to go with it. Although the communication to the interns regarding the status of the intern programme could've been more constant and up-to-date. Still quite a success in my opinion, given that ours was the first year-long placement batch.
We went through a very prestigious and expensive course and had access to thousands of courses through an online training portal.
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
These are a bit grim at the moment as the company is going through cutbacks but I believe that it will improve in the future.
The Culture
Yes, very much so! Made the whole experience that much more fun.
Reading is a bit expensive but we managed.
Not mind-blowing but not that bad either.
Huge social and sports scene.
