The Role
I enjoyed the majority of the placement due to the type of work which I did and who I worked with. I didnt give it 10 stars as there was a couple of days when there was not much work to do.
My colleagues were very helpful and supportive to ensure I made the most of my placement and gave me responsibility.
I was supported well during my placement, where the project manager ensured he talked to me personally to see how I was getting on and if I had any issues, and the section engineers who I worked under ensured I was given plenty of work to do and explained anything if it was new to me.
The majority of the time I was doing work and learning new things although I had a couple of days where I did not have much to do.
As the weeks passed on my placement, I was given increased responsibility and I ended up in charge of a gang of workers for a piece of work which they were doing.
The placement allowed me to develop team working and leadership skills which can assist me in my studies and future career. I also developed engineering knowledge by working on site.
The Company
The office had a good mix of younger people and older people who generally worked well together and had good fun while being productive at the same time.
The placement was well organised and I had the chance to work on different sections which allowed me to gain more experience over a broader range of areas. This included working with the designers as well.
The company ensured I was developing as much as I can, enrolling me on training courses and mentoring me throughout. My supervising civil engineer talked me through the development objectives and resulted in me beiong able to sign some off.
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare/Dental
As long as I continue to do well with my studies and work productively in my next placement, I have been offered a job with the company.
The Culture
There were four other university placement students as well as several college placement students who all socialised well together. This included having a work night out.
The cost of living in the area was not too expensive but I have lived in places where it has been cheaper.
There were a few pubs in the area but apart from that it was quite quiet unless you went into the city centre which was half an hour away.
The village where I stayed was not very big and so choice of activities was limited.
