The Role
It was a challenging and busy 2 weeks, but highly enjoyable and gave a great impression of the firm.
Considering their busy workloads, the lawyers were extremely generous in giving their time to explaining their work or personal experience at the firm etc. The relatively small size of the office meant it was a very personal experience.
Both of my supervisors were very keen to involve me in their work and maximise what I could glean from the scheme. This varied from legal or commercial explanations to more informal conversations about working at Weil.
There was always work to be done (contrary to my previous experience on vacation schemes), but no need to take on more than could be achieved.
Given my unqualified status, I was very impressed with the level of responsibility afforded to me. On the first day I was tasked with drafting a note to a client which was sent off with minimal mark-up; this set an excellent precedent that continued.
The scheme only lasted 2 weeks, but I learnt a lot about the firm, it's work and the day to day role of commercial law in a top American firm based in London.
The Company
The office was extremely focused and hard working, but at the same time calm and amiable. Certainly I had no qualms in asking for help from busy supervisors or trainees.
We were kept busy with a wide variety of specific tasks, everyday work and social activities. We were extremely well looked after.
Training came in the form of talks on all aspects of the firm, as well as more specifically the work undertaken in each practice area. These were extremely informative. I learnt much too from the assessed aspects, which enjoyed close partner attention.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
I was fortunate enough to be offered a job.....
The Culture
Given that this was essentially a 2 week interview, there was a very convivial spirit amongst the students, and we met most days for lunch and a few times after work for a drink.
It's the City, it's to be expected!
Unable to comment I'm afraid...
We were there for just two weeks so clearly there were limited opportunities. We did enjoy a drinks reception, a cocktail making social, and the summer party however..
