    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed how practical the placement year was. Obviously, it was difficult at first because of how practical it was in an industrious area. But, after I had become used to working in that environment it became a lot easier.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • At first it was hard to get involved in things that were going on due to my lack of industrial experience. However, as the year got on I found myself ionvolved in more and more. Colleagues didn't hasitate to ask me if I could give them a hand

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • 3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The priority of the company is to produce stainless steel. Therefore, all engineering work had to be planned around production.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At first I was more of a helping hand. Once I became more competent I was responsible for the maintaining of certain areas of plant.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I don't think you can get this level of practical and industrial experience in university. All the experince I have gained will be very useful when it comes any project work as I will be a lot more specific when it comes to design.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • We all had our own desk with low dividers, so there was always someone to talk to. When you are out on site there are plenty of people out there to meet and talk to.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There wasn't much of a set format for how the placement went. If you want to get involved you have to put yourself out there and say that you want to be involved.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The main thing that I think has developed me is the amount of practical, industrial work experience I have gained. The company has also let me train for my working at heights and my permit course. The permit course allows me to give the ok for any contractors who want to work on site.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The company is very good for anyone looking for practical work, but there isn't much theory work.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I got on well with the other engineering placement students, but didn't see much of any other placement students in different fields.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived in Doncaster and drove to work everyday. It was a little bit more difficult to socialise. But, if you lived in Sheffield it would be relatively cheap as it is a student city.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Sheffield is a great socialising city with many new developments completed and more to come.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The only activity was when collegues went out on the town.

    2/5
