    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • Several panels on the firms high level cases, a trainee Q&A panel, application and interview support. Practice mediation workshop based on a mock case. Afternoon shadowing a trainee and getting an insight into their role in their team and what their day to day tasks are. Also an opportunity to network with lawyers from the firm during a sector fair, evening social and meal times.

  • Gained a deeper insight into the roles of a trainee and what is involved. Understood what is mediation and how to represent a client and negotiate between different parties. Higher level knowledge of a vacation scheme application and legal interviews.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • Very interesting, especially seeing how a trainee works within their team and discussing with them more about why they applied and what made them stand out in an application. The sector fair was really useful in understanding the key difference between the different areas that the firms works in and what cases and roles they do, as well as how the different sectors work together.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Really friendly, everyone was happy to chat and provide help. The supervisors of my trainee let me listen in on calls so that I could understand more about how the team works together and what their different roles are on a case.

  • Highly enjoyable and such a great variation in the amount of workshops to really gain a broad understanding of the firm and commercial law.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Herbert Smith Freehills
  • Make sure the essay question is something you are truly interested in so that it stands out and you come across as passionate. Try to engage with HSF before the scheme such as through open days and online events to show how you are connected to the firm before you apply. The questions for the VS application are the same so it's a good opportunity to gain an insight into this application and have practice.
