First Year Scheme Review

The scheme consisted of a variety of different sessions, including introductions to both corporate and banking, as well as application skills sessions and talks with a variety of different lawyers at the firm. We also had the opportunity to shadow a supervisor, which provided the opportunity to work on real-life cases and deals.

Throughout the scheme, I have developed a number of different skills, both existing and new. Examples include developing my ability to summarise information clearly and concisely, drafting memos, and networking with a number of lawyers.

It was thoroughly enjoyable to gain a greater insight into Latham, and I developed a strong understanding of the variety of roles available through both shadowing my supervisor as well as various coffee chats with others and multiple sessions. We were also able to ask trainees, associates and partners from a wide variety of departments any questions that we had, which also enabled us to develop a wider understanding of the number of roles available.

The company culture and general structure was extremely positive. Everyone was extremely helpful and welcoming, and was more than happy to answer any questions I had. My supervisor could not have been more helpful, and he gave up huge amounts of his own time to ensure I felt supported, welcomed, and had the opportunity to ask any questions I had.

The insight was extremely enjoyable. The range of sessions, coffee chats and opportunities to talk to others at the firm meant I was able to develop my understanding of the firm. I also thoroughly enjoyed the social, which was amazing. The work shadowing was hugely insightful, and really helped me develop my understanding of commercial law.
