    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was introduced to people who work at Amazon and what their role is what kind of developing they do and what projects they do such as developing Alexa for customers. I took part in a hackathon which involved trying 6 different challenges that you have to code in any language I prefer. I was introduced to a past intern who did a year in industry before going back to uni and her experience there appealed to her to become a software engineer. I listened to people who work at Amazon and they shared their experience into how they got into their job roles.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learned how to manage my time for example when given 6 different challenges with each getting harder, I had to make sure that I would at least give all of them a go but also try to spend less time in the easier ones and if I got stuck in one question for too long I moved on. I learned to go out of my comfort zone and try something new and ask questions even when I felt embarassed but the supervisors were very supportive. I developed the idea of learn and be curious because there will be so many things I will not know especially in this innovative world.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • I liked how they described how the culture is very fast-going and how everyone is very innovative. I appreciated how they explained how being a beginner the transition from not knowing anything in a company, Amazon has so many different industries you can into such as Prime or Fresh, this makes me motivated as I get the chance to work in what I prefer. I liked how they gave real-life examples, especially on how it was to start at Amazon. I appreciated how they emphasized how important it is to be curious and how asking questions actually gives a very good impression. I was given an idea of how it is to work at Amazon, as well as how the culture at a company may be completely new such as abbreviations that people at Amazon use while speaking. But they emphasized how you can always get support and that you are not just thrown into such complex jobs but you get support in every step to be successful.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I very much enjoyed the insight as the hackathon was very exciting and prizes were given to everyone, I liked how the past interns were honest and shared how ;even they felt very nervous when they first started working but they were given the right support and learned how the environment is like at Amzon. I liked how the past intern shared that they pent one year in industry instead of directly going back to uni, which made her want to become a software engineer. Overall, I really enjoyed the insight day I like the pace of it , also the support that they shared especially with online assessments and the STAR method when answering questions, to practice to apply for internships.

  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Amazon
  • I think have a look at online assessments and the STAR method when answering questions, to practice applying for internships. But also I think have good motivation to want to apply for Amazon because I learned that to work as a software engineer you need to be very motivated as you will spend hours on one project that you face many problems and even problems with the customers. This showed me that you need to have strong mindset and a reason to motivate yourself as a software engineer.
