Overview
As a placement dev in the ecommerce department the role was rotational so I spent 4 months in a frontend team, a database team and then a support team. the work was varied and helped me gain a multitude of skills in languages I hadn't learnt yet like C# and SQL as we’ll as the opportunity to work with experienced teams on the website and infrastructure of a top retail company in the UK. Sometimes it was hard for me to pick up enough work to keep me busy without feeling like a burden on teammates who had their own work, but I think you just have to be willing to be more proactive.
Skills
i was able to develop my existing coding skills while learning new programming languages and gain experience working in agile and working collaboratively
Responsibilities
not particularly, i was given tasks by my supervisors but given the rotational nature of the placement I wasn't able to get too in-depth with each team I joined so I was just involved in small bug-fixes. some of my friends in other tech departments had the opposite experience however so it depends on the team you end up in
Support & Guidance
i was constantly supported by my managers and the developers and other placement/graduate students within the company. it was a really positive experience.
Culture
very positive and friendly, we had monthly socials with the other placement/graduates which was great especially as I moved for the placement.
Your Impressions
i enjoyed it a lot though i found working from home 4 days a week to be difficult at times overall nit was a great experience
Yes
be friendly and just try to have a conversation in the interviews, my interviewers were really friendly and we talked a lot about how they liked working for next as we’ll as about my interests and previous experience.
