    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • A front-end tool that was employed internally underwent refactoring, and I expanded its capability. I worked with the team to put agile practises, such as daily stand-ups, weekly product family syncs, sprint iterations, reviews, planning, and retros, into practise. My responsibilities included CI/CD pipelines, code development, and deployment. attended meetings, workshops, and lectures both inside and outside the company. ate lunch with the team almost every day. Along with other developers, product owners, managers, technical leads, subject matter experts, and interns, I also worked together.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I developed my front-end development skills. React.js and other auxiliary tools and packages are considerably stronger than I am. I gained knowledge of numerous other technologies required for deployment, CI/CD pipelines, and the use of agile approaches. Jira, Jenkins, OCP, AWS, Helm, and more tools were included. Moreover, I enhanced my soft skills. I bonded well with the group, which helped me become more self-assured and collaborative. I developed my bravery, ingenuity, ability to set lofty goals, maturity, and responsibility. I also improved both myself and others.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes. I had the opportunity to be my own customer, product owner, designer, developer, and tester. I chose the tasks that would need to be completed, setting my priorities and scheduling them throughout the available sprints. I made all the designs, wrote all the code, and ran tests to see if I could break functionality. I presided over meetings with other teams in the product family, including weekly syncs and daily stand-ups. I was able to push the more experienced people and aid in teaching others.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Quite a bit of support was shown. The onboarding procedure was thorough and equipped with all the necessary data, resources, and gear. My first point of contact was a dedicated manager who was also a subject matter expert (SME). Being able to ask any questions I wanted to without ever feeling timid or unsure of what I may ask was made possible by having this SME. In terms of having both technical and non-technical assistance, there was a solid support structure.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The whole environment and company culture were fantastic. Work-life balance was strongly encouraged and excellent. Nobody is required to be online after hours. Table tennis was one of the activities we played, and we regularly had conversations that had nothing to do with work. Instead of being stuffy and corporate, it felt more like a family where everyone was focused on assisting each other rather than competing with one another for advancement. When it was appropriate, things were serious; otherwise, they were fun.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I adored it to the fullest. The work accomplished was significant and vital, and the career possibilities are excellent. It was a pleasure to work with the team. The importance of striking a healthy work-life balance was highlighted. The phrase "This internship is like a well kept secret" was used when it was first introduced to us. Despite being small, the intern cohort allowed for strong bonds to form. There were a tonne of extra options, enjoyable social events, and volunteer opportunities.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Discover Financial Services
  • As many inquiries as you can. Avoid being timid. Be enquiring. Adopt the behaviours from Discover. A fantastic time. Get to know as many people as you can; I made an effort to meet someone new every day, and every single one of them was welcoming and upbeat. Many of your coworkers will be laid-back and easygoing yet possessing significant technical expertise. Put these people to work for you. Learn as much as you can from them, and they will be the first and happiest to explain anything that does not make sense to you.
