    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The work includes joining a team of other software engineers who are working full time and giving you tasks/projects. My daily tasks include working on the tickets that are assigned to the team, both in back end and in front end. At first, most of the time is spent learning the required tools if you are not familiar yet. There are also frequent networking opportunities throughout the internship, that are valuable for creating new connections.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed a lot of new skills by learning about a wide variety of technology and using them in practice. Most of these tools are not taught in my university, but they are widely used in the firm and beyond, which is significantly beneficial for my career. This includes Javascript, React, Continuous Integration / Continuous Development pipelines and others. I also had an opportunity to learn about AWS services. I have also developed my existing Java skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • In terms of responsibilities, I have not been assigned many responsibilities in the starting few weeks of the intership. This is because I was not familiar with most of the tools that are used in the team/firm, so I needed to spend some time learning them, as well as do more mandatory training. However, later in the internship I got assigned more responsibilities, that allowed me to demonstrate my skills and apply them in practice.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • At first, I was not familiar with how the firm operates, what my team is doing, what tools I need to know so it would have been confusing if not for my manager. We scheduled regular 1 on 1 meetings, where I received valuable support and guidance, and could ask any questions that appear. My team and other interns also helped me when I got stuck at any point on some task, so that I could progress without big delays.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is great. The work/life balance is good, it is also possible to have a hybrid working schedule if desired. The company organises multiple networking opportunities throughout the internship, which allows interns to create new connections, which is beneficial for their career. Overall, it seems like everyone is very friendly and open to interact, which is a great bonus for new people. The company also provides opportunities to do sports, which is a great bonus.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • The internship has been great fun. I came here to learn more about the job I am planning to do (software developer), so this has been a great opportunity for me to learn about it. I am overall satisfied with the wide range of skills and practical knowledge that I received during the internship, which will be beneficial in my further career. I am also satisfied with the networking opportunities that were provided by the company.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to J.P. Morgan
  • I recommend to everyone who is applying to JP Morgan to research the different lines of business. Additionally, it is very important to show enthusiasm in the field by doing your own projects. This not only allows you to gain more skills that will be used during the internship (so you will be able to apply your skills instead of just getting familiar with it), as well as shows your motivation to succeed in the field.
