Overview
An opportunity for first-year undergraduates to gain an insight into what life as a lawyer is like. The two-day scheme was packed with a host of activities including trainee shadowing, networking, a group exercise, and various talks from members of Taylor Wessing.
Skills
Teamwork & presentation skills were improved through the group exercise. The ability to network confidently was developed through the networking session. The trainee shadowing was useful in bettering my understanding of how lawyers work in practice, beyond that of what is taught in university.
Business Insight
Much of the focus was on the different legal teams within the firm and, by shadowing the current trainees, you very much got an insight into what work was like from their perspective rather than associates or partners. Similarly, everything was concentrated on the role of a solicitor, rather than any of the other positions within the firm.
Culture
Taylor Wessing radiates in its warmth, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all at the firm. Everyone, from trainees to partners, was very approachable and happy to take the time to talk with you about what you were up to and your experience at the firm so far. Most consulted sources indicate that Taylor Wessing seems to be particularly strong in this aspect, creating a friendly culture that stresses cooperative working and a healthy work-life balance.
Your Impressions
I found it very enjoyable. Despite the days being jammed with various activities/sessions, each one felt valuable and insightful. The employees at the firm were very friendly and keen to ensure we got the most out of the two-day experience. Similarly, the cohort of first-year undergraduates were all very nice.
Yes
Demonstrate your willingness to learn from them and how invaluable you believe the experience is. Understand their core values and demonstrate how they align with your personal values. Ensure you show that you are a well-rounded individual with interests that go beyond the classroom; they aren't looking for people who solely enjoy law.
