Overview
I am currently a Laboratory analyst in the Quality Control Chemistry Laboratory, testing the sites finished products. I ensure that our products; aqueous toothpaste, non-aqueous toothpaste and mouthwash contain the correct quantity of various elements within our products that also meet the market specification. Each morning I check our worksheet that specifies what work has been assigned to me that day. As I am working on finished products, we have a variety of tests that can be assigned to me that day and sometimes more than one. This ensures we don’t waste time and efficiently test all the products within our week turnaround time.
Skills
I am learning different machinery, relations and what goes into making a good product for consumers. It is teaching me to be organised and careful, putting all my focus into what I am doing. I have further developed my IT skills and gained new knowledge of different software. I have learnt how important this role is in ensuring that the product produced is safe for consumers and within the expected limits of the market. Furthermore, I have learnt and had experience in relations with consumable suppliers.
Responsibilities
I have been given as much responsibility as other analysts within the laboratory from communicating with suppliers and responsibility of making controls. Additionally, I had been given responsibility for archiving documents and receiving materials, carrying out my tasks for the day in a timely manner to prevent a build-up of samples. There is not much difference between the responsibilities given to me and other colleagues with exception to responsibilities that require a more experienced analyst. I have been trained on most of the machines allowing me to be as capable as other analysts.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance throughout my placement. My colleagues were very helpful and kind. This meant that even if I had been fully trained on equipment or procedure, if I was ever unsure about what to do next I could always ask a colleague and they would happily help me. I had a tracker which assigned me tasks to complete and due dates which helped me get trained quickly and during this time my managers and the trainers were very helpful ensuring we felt confident in our abilities and giving clarification if required. I also had monthly meetings with my manager where I could discuss support I might have needed regarding if I found the work difficult or wanted to work on a specific skill.
Culture
The company is very people orientated, they care about their workers and how they are feeling whilst also caring about the product they produced. They were always happy to answer any questions employees had and wanted to support them. They were encouraging in new projects and celebrated them once completed. The atmosphere felt quite relaxing but professional as well. It helped me when first arriving making me feel like a part of the team and this was somewhere I could be proud to say I worked.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoy my placement. I am constantly learning new things and have been given the opportunity to also see what other roles entail and have been cross trained in the other labs. This not only helps the company as I am now versatile but also helps me in expanding my knowledge and skills. My colleagues have been wonderful and had made this placement better as they were always helpful and understanding, I really feel like a part of the team. The also did other social events outside of work. This placement has been a joy and insightful experience.
Yes
Don’t let the lengthy process of applying deter you away as if you are successful, it is a wonderful experience. Be true to yourself as it adds to the team but also lets the employers know you are open and can help support you in different ways. Even if the degree you are studying for does not directly correlate with the placement still apply, as someone who’s degree did not initially seem to be what they were after I was the kind of person they wanted.
