The Role
It was 'only' a work shadow day that I undertook, visiting various departments of the law firm's Edinburgh office.
I feel I would have benefited from more time in the office, however I did undertake confidential research on behalf of some colleagues, which I did feel was greatly appreciated.
I was introduced to a handful of collegues who all helped me in various ways. I was made to feel welcome and consequently was confident to ask about any issues.
I think I was capable of undertaking more work, but as stated, it would have been helpful to have a longer placement in order to really see a task through a specific stage.
The work I undertook was of a confidential nature, and although I had obviously signed a confidentiality agreement, I appreciated that I was given such an undertaking after only just being introduced to my colleagues.
I was exposed to the various departments, and thus to the large amount of litigation which goes into these specific branches (for instance, renewable energy). As far as skills are concerned, I believe the experience was valuable, but the associated skills are something that I will develop and fine tune over the next few years and in future placements. However, the work shadow day was indeed an excellent use of time, and of course added a valuable line to my CV!
The Company
There is of course only so much fun to be had in a work place, but the staff were great personalities and a few light-hearted conversations flew about.
Since I was only in for the day, I think the attitude was more to just wait and see what was happening on the day when I arrived, and to help out those colleagues with any appropriate research.
For me, I could have learned more over a longer period, however for such a big firm to invest resources in me even for just a day proved how pro-active they are as recruiters. It was certainly a worthwhile experience.
They are a huge, well-reputed law firm with so many branches of work. It just depends personally if they suit what I ultimately decide to do in my law career/
The Culture
There was a group of trainees and in general, a spectrum of all ages, which was great.
Edinburgh is definitely quite an expensive city to live in!
Edinburgh's nightlife is superb - something for everyone!
