Overview
I took part in trainee-type tasks given to me by trainees, associates and partners. Vacation scheme students also attended talks on all department areas and workshops on pro-bono and ESG activities within the firm. There was also a group project which was submitted in the second week, followed by a Q&A with graduate recruitment partners.
Skills
Attention to detail; organisation; prioritising workloads for different people of varied seniority; people like being asked questions and are happy to help; have self-confidence - you are worthy of being on your vacation scheme and have a chance equal to anyone else of securing a training contract.
Business Insight
There was a great structure to the vacation scheme, with ample opportunities for asking questions to anyone across the firm. This was really helpful for learning about different practise areas and career progress as you were not limited to your own department. We also heard from trainees who had undertaken secondments and could give us good insight into the businesses of clients. Our group project also forced us to learn more about a different practise area.
Culture
The best of any firm I have come across. Everyone was friendly, encouraging, kind and happy to help. I looked forward to going into work everyday and making friends with other vacation schemers. The culture was one of the things I liked the most about TW.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the insight I gained on the week. I was fortunate enough (as were many) to sit in an office with one associate, listen in on client calls and even draft some points for them. This made it much easier to learn about the day-to-day work of solicitors and be able to ask an associate so many questions was invaluable.
Yes
Before any vacation scheme do your research on the firm but more specifically in the practise area you will be sitting in. This makes it much easier to understand how the department works, but also enables you to ask genuine and smart questions. Follow the firm on LinkedIn and look at the profiles of some of the people in your department so you know where common interests (in law but also more generally in life) lie so you can connect with people better.
