    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As a full-stack engineering intern I worked with multiple teams doing mainly pair development and debugging with other team members, some of the simpler backend feature or bug tickets and also attended all the team's meetings such as stand-up at the beginning of the day. My work also included documentation, testing and research for features being developed by other team members.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have become much more comfortable with technologies and practices such as continuous integration and deployment, infrastructure as code, cloud-based development, unit and integration testing and working in an agile team. However, I also improved a lot on my existing skills with Go, GraphQL, SQL, git and other common software development tools as well as project organisation and work presentation.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • During the internship I did the majority of my work just as another team member, despite being an intern. I was given some freedom with what I want to work with and any opinions I had were always considered. When meetings involved a lot of my work I was also given the chance to lead the meetings to present the work done and any other useful information as I felt right.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Although I came with some existing knowledge that allowed me to do a lot of my work independently, there has always been someone available that could help me on any issues I had and introductions to teams and projects were very well done. Additionally, due to me working with multiple teams during my internship, there has never been a point at which I was completely blocked.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The general atmosphere was beyond any expectations I had. Everyone I worked with enjoyed software engineering and were always happy to work with me. Outside of work, everyone was great to meet and talk to, regardless of our differences in age, experience or job position.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I certainly enjoyed it much more than I expected to and so I am glad that I took the risk of allocating the most time I could to it from my summer holiday. I would definitely do it again in the future, although the close future I think it would be better for me to try out other industries as well.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Atos
  • Don't worry about lack of knowledge going in, Atos provides great training and support before and throughout the internship. If you are confident in what you want from the internship make sure you let Atos know, having done that myself I think I got one of, if not the best 8 week internship I could for what I wanted to gain from it.
