    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The scheme was two weeks long and consisted of a mixture of networking sessions, panel presentations, and work within our allocated departments. I sat with international capital markets and worked on current transactions, including bond issuances. I helped draft the relevant documents and write up minutes from client calls. I was also able to network with current Allen & Overy lawyers within different departments and to learn from different teams and the work they do daily.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I developed numerous technical and soft skills throughout my two week placement at A & O. I gained an increased understanding of the procedural requirements and documents for bond issuances, such as comfort letters and syndication agreements. I also developed collaborative skills from working on a group presentation exercise - the innovation challenge. This allowed us to work collaboratively and pitch our ideas to a panel of senior lawyers, helping both my teamwork and public speaking skills.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • I gained a very good understanding about all the business and potential roles available. From day one we were hosted with a whole range of talks about the potential career routes into the firm, the different practice areas and what they entailed, and the areas of the firm which are not commonly made public on recruiting sites. For instance, a&o's consulting or legal tech solutions arm was a big selling point which I greatly appreciated.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I got a very good sense of Allen & Overy's friendly and collaborative culture. This was both through a mixture of getting to know my team within the specific department I was sat in, as well as the ample opportunity we were provided with to network with individuals on our own accord. Every one I met was incredibly friendly and willing to take time to explain the work or their experiences to me, which was very appreciated.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I found the insight scheme incredibly fun and an amazing opportunity to learn more about the firm, its people, and the work I would potentially encounter as a commercial lawyer. My team was incredibly friendly and willing to walk me through the various tasks I was given throughout the two weeks. I was also able to network with lawyers from different teams and to socialise with my vac scheme cohort after work. Overall an amazing time.

  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to A&O Shearman
  • I would recommend starting early, particularly with the initial stages of the application process as these are most crucial in determining whether or not you will be given an interview. I would reach out to uni career services or to individuals over the internet as being able to back up your interest in the firm is crucial. I would prepare lots for the case study and interview and make sure to proofread all your answers
