    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • Attended a number of insightful presentations providing information on departments as well as initiatives with in the firm. We were also matched with a trainer who gave us tasks to complete, similar to that of an actual trainee. We were also able to ask any questions which we may have about the work or firm itself. Furthermore, social activities were run to enable us to meet others participating in the scheme, building our networks within the legal industry.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • By completing activities similar to that of a trainee I gained a better insight into what I may come across in the future., this developed my ability to face new challenges and research areas I may not be so confident with. Furthermore, we were placed into teams to create a presentation in answer to a question posed. This developed my existing team working skills and improved my confidence when actually presenting. We also interviewed people from all levels of the firm which was enjoyable.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • Having done research around the legal profession prior to the scheme it was interesting to see what the day to day life of a city lawyer is actually like, as well as the role of individuals within the firm (such as those with a Tech focus within Fuse). The route to qualification was also fully explained, and how it differs between firms. This helped me to make an informed decision when choosing to accept a training contract with the firm following my positive and informational experience.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everyone was helpful and wanted to offer their personal experiences within the firm. Their opinions did not feel rehearsed and instead they spoke candidly giving a real insight. Everyone was happy to answer any question you may have, asking one did not make me feel burdensome. The company culture was positive and friendlier than some other firms I have come into contact within. The support available to trainees is impressive. The general atmosphere provided an environment I would like to work in.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I enjoyed learning about the culture of the firm and gaining an insight into the work done. I also enjoyed being able to network with the lawyers and also the other vac schemers. You build real connections beyond the scheme and into your future career. We were also matched with a trainee buddy who I am still in contact with and she is always happy to answer any questions - not just those specific to Allen & Overy.

  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to A&O Shearman
  • When it comes to applying be your true authentic self, they want individuals and not replicas! In the interviews you are not expected to know everything but make a good thoughtful attempt, that is what is valued. Think of it as a conversation rather than an interview, the firm wants to see how well you fit with the firms culture and your true reasoning for applying. Think about what inspires you. Importantly, not every experience you mention needs to be legal! In fact non-legal examples are often more telling.
