    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • There were a series of talks and workshops where we were able to hear from a range partners, associates, trainees and grad recruitment. The sessions were hugely interactive and there were particularly opportunities for networking such as during the breakfast, lunch and dinners. There were several case studies which were interesting to hear from as the speakers explained the timeline of how the company approached the client and strategies used. It was very very packed.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learnt a whole new skillset as a STEM student in the midst of the many law participants. The first year scheme as a whole was very technical but did not discriminate my knowledge as a non-law student. The workshop where we were to read through a case study and participate in a briefing with law specific terminology, the concepts were explained in the brief and if not I was able to deduce from the context.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • It was very very well structured in terms of gaining an in depth understanding of the practices of the different departments. On each day, there was a departmental careers fair which allowed us to speak to representatives of the department. I realised my interest for Real Estate and Finance which I had not been too exposed to before. The trainee shadowing was highly useful for a flavour of the roles within the firm as a business.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • It was excellent. From the grad recruitment team to all the speakers and trainees that took their time to lunch with us, there was a collective welcoming spirit that enabled me to understand the culture of the firm within the first 20 minutes in the office. After the attending the session, I gathered that this firm was the ideal environment to work in as a result of the people and their attitude to work as a whole.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I enjoyed it very much as a STEM student. The workshop was a very huge delve into law, particularly the thorough case study sessions where a partner would describe HSF's role in headline cases which were very much tangible. It was pleasing to see the law firm without a front as we were able to integrate ourselves into the culture and business of the firm, especially in the shadowing session. I enjoyed all aspects of it.
