    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was prototyping parts of a product using Typescript and Go, working extensively with Docker. Day to day I had a daily standup meeting, and occasionally met with my supervisor. The rest of the day I had free to work on my code.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learnt a lot more Typescript and Go, and learnt about Docker for the first time.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I had the freedom to choose and define what features I worked on, but not on the overall project direction. I chose my own technologies, although I did discuss them with my supervisor to make sure we all had a base level of knowledge of them. I didn't have any responsibility for anything that would ever be customer facing - this was explicitly disallowed.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I honestly didn't ask for that much support, but my supervisor was always available if I had specific questions about the project or needed general guidance as to its direction or how to solve a specific problem. The team I was in was quite busy, so didn't have that much time to review my work, but were always helpful regardless.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The atmosphere was friendly - I almost always was made to feel like part of the team and not just an intern. The culture was quite relaxed and informal - I set my own hours and noone checked on me, the meetings were flexible and also informal. HR and corporate were present but not particularly involved except the occasional form to fill etc.
