    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • To develop chemical processes by trialling new routes of manufacture using flow chemistry. The role is lab based with some admin work when recording experiments. I was mostly assigned individual tasks with some support from my supervisor. I was able to participate in personal development activities such as seminars and lectures also.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed my lab skills and experienced the use of equipment which you cannot access at most universities including NMR, UPLC and flow facilities to name a few. I have developed my presentation skills by regularly feeding back results to my team and project leads. I have developed independent working skills through being given my own projects wherein I decide the direction of the project.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a significant amount of personal responsibility. I was assigned individual projects and had to meet soft deadlines. I was also assigned work within the team such as developing models for improving ways of working. I was also responsible for working with potentially hazardous chemicals.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was assigned a supervisor to oversee any work that I was doing. They also gave training or pointed me in the direction of training for different lab techniques. I also had a line manager who oversees the team. She provided informational support and also acted as a check-in for workloads and stress.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Due to the pandemic, there were some limitations to the types of events that could be held. However, there were many online events held such as the monthly "science connect" where people from around the departments share advances or challenges. There are regular team meetings as well as lab meetings so there is a great general atmosphere as you quickly get to know lots of people. AstraZeneca is also inclusive including events for pride month.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed my placement significantly. It has given me a greater appreciation for the application of my degree to a working environment. I have also gained an enjoyment for practical chemistry. I also took part in company football which I greatly enjoyed. The placement exceeded my expectations in terms of my impact, the opportunities I have and the support that I have had. I would absolutely consider working here in the future.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca
  • Learn about the company values. Key personal skills include teamwork, independent working, time management, communication and your willingness to learn. During the interview, there was a technical and a personal portion. They really value your personal reasons for wanting to work in pharma in general and AstraZeneca specifically.
