    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The insight scheme consisted of multiple talks from the firm along with a social event on the first evening, to get to know the other participants on the scheme better. Presentations ranged from an introduction to the training programme and the firm as a whole, to partner and associate Q&As. There was also an opportunity for a White & Case application skills workshop which gives participants an unparalleled insight into the minds of graduate recruitment.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • There was an application and interview skills workshop presented by graduate recruitment to the participants. This was a really good experience because the team gave insight and advice into not just normal face-to-face interviews, but also interviews of a virtual nature - which is quite fitting given current circumstances. Another skill developed was teamwork which took place during the social event organised by the firm. We were split into teams for a fun competition and this really developed my communication with my peers.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • The very first session given to participants was about the White & Case training programme and a few sessions later covered the application process for the programme. This was a great introduction because we immediately knew the opportunities that would be provided to us if we were to go further with the firm. We were split into breakout groups to speak to trainees from different practice areas and this was a good way to get a candid understanding of the business.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I really enjoyed the culture of the firm. Many of the lawyers seem to be from or have studied in London so there is that seems to add to the inclusive culture of the firm. Particularly when speaking to the trainees in the breakout rooms, while it was still quite professional, the culture and atmosphere was very relaxed and people were comfortable to make jokes and have a laugh which made the firm feel very friendly.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I really enjoyed this insight scheme; it was definitely one of my favourite first year schemes because of how interactive it was, matched with how welcoming the atmosphere was despite it being held virtually. I am definitely keen to apply for a vacation scheme next year and this scheme has put me in a good position. The scheme exceeded my expectations and dispelled a lot of the myths and rumours that I had heard about US law firms.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to White & Case
  • My biggest tip for those looking to apply to White & Case is to speak to people at the firm already - they are very friendly and so are likely to want to help. For the application, it is important to show your commercial awareness in the application and try to highlight all of their competencies through your own personal examples to show that you would fit in the firm very well. Be specific. If you can replace the firm name in your application, then your application is specific enough.
