    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was allocated into two departments, where I spent a day each. I was given tasks that related to actual work that the departments were doing at the time. We scheduled calls regularly so I could ask questions about the tasks as well as the firm and its departments. We also had presentations about the firm's training contract and its inclusion and diversity efforts, as well as a trainee panel to engage with the firm's current trainees.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I was able to learn about basic knowledge that is needed to work in each department, and it provided a deeper insight and understanding into the works they do. I also learned to think more practically, and consider how the work I am doing will be applied in practice. I was also able to develop communication skills, both verbal and written, while engaging with people in my department and explaining my reasoning, but also while delivering written tasks that I completed.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • It gave me a clearer understanding of the different types of work that the firm does, and the underlying purposes of the tasks completed within each department. I was able to better understand how various departments come together to assist each other on a single deal. I became more interested in practice areas and sectors that I had not considered before, such as Competition. It was a great opportunity to broaden my interest in various types of work that law firms specialise in.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • It was genuinely inclusive. I was invited to team meetings where senior members were also present. I was always asked to introduce myself, and everyone asked questions to get to know me better as a person. Within team meetings, people tried to explain particular areas that might be difficult or complex, as well as areas that I might not be familiar with. I was genuinely treated as part of the team even though I was only there for a day.

It was amazing how much insight I could gain within the short time period, especially on the firm's culture and the types of people it attracts.
