    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • Greatly enjoyed the session. I especially enjoyed the negotiation game as it allowed us to learn and apply skills which we can use in the future. I was also pleasantly surprised to find out that Dentons hold competitions for their employees to see who can generate files the quickest. The insights provided by trainees, graduate recruitment team and partner were very useful and interesting. I did not have any further questions to ask. Overall a very enjoyable experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Very valued. I felt valued before the insight event as I was asked if I had any questions before hand. I was allowed to ask questions during the event. I was allowed to ask questions to any member of the team which was picked up upon by one of the graduate recruitment team members. Having our own trainee in the negotiation game also made me feel very valued as I felt like this experience was even more personal. Indeed, the fact that there was only 30 other students there made me feel very special indeed.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I felt like I received a lot of guidance through the insight event. This was down to the feedback given at the end of the negotiation game where our own trainee had things to say about each individual person. This advice then allowed us to reflect on what we had said / not said to improve us for next time. The guidance by the graduate recruitment team was very well done as they gave us clear insights around how to submit a successful application to Dentons.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • All the skills used in the insight event will help me in the future. Firstly the skills of writing a successful application will help me with future applications as well as any letters I draft to clients. The skills learnt in the negotiation game will assist me in understanding where an opposing party has came from. Allowing me to see different points of view and push forward what is important to my client. Indeed, the information provided by the partner was incredibly useful in preparing us for future life as a trainee

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • There was a clear beginning, middle and end to the insight event. These were all clearly set out before the event started in an email and in the introduction to the insight event. Indeed, in each activity there were also clear structures put in place such as timekeeping for when we had to speak and think about what we will say in teams. Each speaker spoke in a structured way. Allowing us to fully understand what they were saying.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The general atmosphere was great. I could not fault it. All members who took part in the insight event including the students were fully willing to engage in conversation. Thus, making the atmosphere more collaborative and friendly. The way Dentons has marketed themselves in the insight event comes across as lively and forward thinking. This then encourages us to engage with the questions as well as statements given to us by the Dentons team. Overall, a very engaging atmosphere.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I believe a lot of investment was put in to us through personal training and training. Examples would be through the personal training we got from the current trainees. They personally helped us improve our skills and gave us detailed feedback. Other examples would be the investment in time the firm put in to prepare the slides as well as organising all the relevant employees who took part in the event. In conclusion, the firm put in effort to prepare us for the life of a trainee.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • This was obtained through the information given by all members of the Dentons team. The partner helped us prepare for what life would be like in the firm as he answered any questions we had about working at Dentons. The trainees helped us understand what it is like to work with little to no experience at the firm. They put us at ease through telling us that the rest of the Dentons team do not expect you to have any prior knowledge of working at a commercial law firm. The graduate recruitment team gave us an idea of what the culture is like at the firm. Thus, what it is like to work there.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • As previously stated. The graduate recruitment team gave us great insights into the culture of the firm. They detailed all six of the diversity networks as well as other ways to get involved in the firm through football matches and charity events. The trainees backed this up through their experience with the firm, detailing how the firm has helped them adapt to the new environment of the workplace. Overall, we were given a very clear picture of what the culture at Dentons was like.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • As a brand ambassador, it is reassuring to see that the attributes the firm talks about are actually put into practice through the insight days. It was clearly shown that Dentons not only want to be the biggest but the best. Therefore, it has solidified my decision in wanting to be part of the amazing culture Dentons has. I very much look forward to become a bigger part of Dentons in the future and the insight day has definitely helped me with this.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • Due to the current pandemic, we did not travel. Therefore we did not need to be reimbursed for expenses. Indeed, I do not think it would be reasonable to pay us for attending an insight day. Especially as money is tight in the current circumstances. However, I am sure in the future if we needed to travel, Dentons would reimburse us for travel if this happened.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes there were. We met the graduate recruitment team as well as a partner and current trainees. We could network through the ability to add them on linkedIn after the event took place. We could also add questions to the Dentons team in the chat. Therefore, it was as if we were speaking to them directly. In the negotiation game, we could also network with the trainees. Indeed, we could also network with others in our group and the opposing team members after the game.

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • Mostly as stated before, the opportunities to network were very good under the circumstances. Networking would have been easier if the event was in person. However, Dentons made a great event, with the opportunity to speak to a variety of individuals from all round Scotland. Social opportunities were not available due to Covid.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • We did! We found out that employees have a yearly football match. Taking on different Dentons teams from around the world. Indeed, we were told about a type of activity like a hackathon where solicitors all compete to generate documents the quickest. This was based off of a question I asked about automating documents. This shows that Dentons really is a leading innovative firm as they encourage the parallels of social activities with leading sectors that the firm is involved with. Creating a very healthy atmosphere.

    5/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • I definitely would! I would mostly recommend it down to the fact that the Dentons team gave an incredible insight to Dentons and also gave some great advice about the application process. Of course, this can be applied to other law firms which is even more valuable to students who are applying to other firms. Dentons gave a variety of engaging activities to the students and given the circumstances I believe they done a very good job of not making it your average insight event with the negotiation game.
