Software Engineer Immersion Program Intern Review

I really enjoyed this summer and am very grateful for the experience. I was really pleasantly surprised that the internship was not cancelled as so many of my university course-mates got their internships cancelled and even more surprised at just how well the internship had been moved online. I had a mazing manager and team: even in an online context, networking was actually quite good. Finally, I highly value the opportunity to work for a non-profit since it might be what I would like to go into further in the future. I just hope to one day be there in person.

That was no doubt the best aspect of this internship. There was clearly an enormous amount if work put into creating this experience: for such a large cohort of interns and for moving the experience online quite last minute, so many ressources were put at our disposal and organisation was seamless. I was really impressed by this and I believe it really reflects on the company when you are so clearly valued.

We had opportunities to ask questions and give our input on both very large scales in large online events and very small scale in our own teams. That was an amazing of the experience. We had many different people to talk to: our managers and their team, our social good advisors, our team-mates, our mentors, recruitment, fellow interns, etc. Everyone in the company seemed very open to take some time off their work to share their experience with us interns.

The comments provided by my manager were by far the most valuable comments I have received and I can see now how they are making me better in my degree studies. For that I am very grateful. I learned new technologies and gained a lot of insight into the company and its business. The opportunity to work for a non-profit was also really enriching, I learned a lot about that sector which is very valuable me who was interested in learning more about working for non-profits.

I think the structure was great: it was really well organised and there was always something to do. The only comment I can really make was that there were too many things to take part in and so many ressources at my disposal that I did not get the time to engage with. I feel like the experience could have lasted easily 2 more weeks and I still would have been very busy. Other then that it was seamless.

What stood out for me was the openness and friendliness of everyone there. Each employee I interacted with, no matter their position, was incredibly open to sharing their experience and very likely to give invaluable professional advice. The culture amongst interns was also very friendly and positive, which made team-working and networking so easy: I think that culture was just a reaction to the company culture we where in. All in all, I got an amazing impression of the company.

My manager provided me with the most valuable comments and tips and that was probably the most important part of my learning there. The fact that we were provided with group activities and individual coding tasks that were reviewed by our manager mean that I felt like a lot of ressources were invested in developing my skills and providing me with feedback throughout the experience on both my team-working and individual skills. I think the company did a great job at this.

Talking to the employees there definitely gave me an amazing insight into what it would be like to have a full-time role in the company. We were including in daily scrum meetings and sat in many of our teams meetings/trainings. Sadly, with the internship being online and us focusing principally on a project with interns for an external non-profit, we did not get a hands-on experience of what it would be like. I hope to have that next summer.

I was hired in the Glasgow office and what everyone there said was that the culture in that office is very different from the others because it is mostly composed of tech teams. Indeed, the impression from that office was a very open and friendly and relaxed work environment. I can hardly say about the other offices. What also stood out was how we were really not expected to know so much, so much as being taught or learn things then.

It definitely was useful for me as I gained insight into the workings of a non-profit as well as JP Morgan. I got a very good impression of the firm, very far from the reputation of financial institutions being very formal and stressful work places. However, I still do not know whether I would want to go into Software Engineering because we didn’t have the typical internship experience. I also really don’t know what I want to do, but the internship will definitely help.

We were paid more then adequately: we were payed for the initially signed 10weeks of internship, even though we only worked for 5weeks. This was indeed very generous and left a great impression on the other interns and myself as it made us feel properly valued as employees. It again reflects really well on the image of the company and was really well received by everyone. We were payed to learn and thats always amazing.

On a small scale, talking to our managers, teams and mentors led to me meeting some amazing people in the company. I don’t think that there were many networking events organised by the company with the cohort of interns but we organised our own networking events over lunch breaks. I attended several and met other people from my team which was great. Another thing, the fact that we worked so closely in teams with other interns meant that we properly got to know some interns and that was great.

As I said before there were no real networking events organised. However there were many events organised for the entire intern cohort of the company with hundreds of people on a call for guest speakers: that was great and gave me a sense of belonging even with everything online. The speakers were also all very interesting and the opportunity to have questions asked by interns was a really nice touch. All in all it was great.

Yes. Everyone I talked to from the Glasgow office mentioned the various groups you could be appart of and interns were invited to join them even for the short length of our internships. They also shared with us the various events and activities that you can take part in usually. The offsite to the London office and the places to go to in Glasgow. That was definitely shared with us and made us look forward to these things if we were to join the company.

Definitely. I think the quality of this experience was close to none. The organisation was great, the content was great and the people were great. I had serious doubts before the start of the internship about it being online but actually ended up having a great time and making amazing friends. So much so that I having been offered to come back next summer, I have decided to join again. So I would definitely recommend it to friends. And I have already.
