The Role
The internship was really engaging and I learned a lot of valuable transferable skills, as well as gaining insight into the industry and expanding my knowledge. The company held a number of guest speaker events, which were really inspiring and gave me a number of good tips to use in my future career. They also hosted some social events at the end of the week to add an element of fun and allow us to interact with all the other interns.
Everyone at the company and the other interns were so helpful, friendly and made you feel like your input mattered. When doing group projects in teams everyone in the group listened to everyone’s ideas and valuable each other’s inputs. I never get under valued or ignored at any point over the course of the internship. The managers, project advisor and mentors also acknowledge everyone’s hard work and in one-to-one meetings would give praise where due.
The managers and mentors were so helpful and were always quick to respond to queries. They also provided useful and frequent feedback, to help ensure the process was smooth and enjoyable. They set up group chats and arranged weekly catch ups both in group setting and on a one-to-one basis to check that you were ok and managing with the projects and to give advise and support. I couldn’t of asked for much more in terms of support.
Each day was well planned. The first week consisted of a lot of introductory sessions and welcome sessions to allow everyone to feel comfortable and excited for the internship, as well as some training sessions, which filled up the days from 9 until 5. The projects and training also were managed and planned to give us just a good amount of work load to keep us busy every day, without it being too overwhelming. There was a good balance.
We were given the responsibility to manage our own time with projects and arrange our own group meetings. It was also our responsibility to make sure Required training was booked in and completed and additional training was in abundance if you wished to carry out more. It was also our responsibility to reach out and network with others in the company and in different teams to gain an insight into the company and the industry.
I think all skills learned will be very useful both in my degree and future career. The core competencies skills developed throughout the internship include: analytical thinking, drive for excellence, commercial acumen, technical skills, communication, partnership, motivation to develop and integrity. All of these skills are essential both for progressing and being successful in a career and will also come in very useful in degree programmes as these skills are not industry specific and are transferable.
The Company
There was always a good vibe each day during the internship all be it in a virtual setting. Atmosphere was professional but welcoming and team driven. Each day you were always interacting with different groups of people, from different teams within J.P. Morgan’s and different levels of experience, whom were always very warm and inspiring and made the day more interactive. Everyone seemed to praise the company and it felt like you were part of a community. They also gave you the opportunity to join other groups such as women on the move, which is also inspiring.
The overall internship was well organised and planned with a good balance between project work, speaker events and social events, with a chance to also participate in volunteering, creating maps for countries that have gaps and missing areas on there search maps. This gave us plenty of chance to develop our skills over both projects and both were planned well to give us the right amount of work to enable it to be completed to a high ability in the time given, while also gaining other great experiences.
We were given excel, pitch pro training along and technical skills training and how to work certain tools. We also had a range of mandatory training that focused on very useful skills such as presenting, professional communication and building your own brand. As well as this there was loads of additional training that was optional covering tool training, industry knowledge and transferable skills. They also has several arranged events that gave useful tips and guidance.

The future job prospects within J.P Morgan are really good. After completing the internship we were all given the opportunity to apply to the graduate scheme and I was given an offer onto this scheme starting next year, which I am really looking forward to starting. From networking the company seems like it has so many opportunities for people and allows people to continue to grow and develop their skill sets and many employer have worked with J.P. Morgan for years. The internship is a great way to kickstart your career.
The Culture
There was a good number of social events throughout the course of the internship, which were fun and allowed the interns to socialise with each other and also some of previous years interns, which was nice. The events were fun such as treasure hunts and other team based activities. They also hosted virtual drinks to allow us to engage in a more informal setting and relax after working hours. This was a nice way to have chats about other things than work.
I carried it out from my home due the current situation and the internship was transformed to a virtual setting last minute. This meant I incurred no travel costs and I didn’t have to buy any additional equipment my laptop I already had was sufficient. As the current pandemic we couldn’t social in a face-to-face setting and so there was also no costed incurred to socialise. The virtual events were still fun and engaging to make the most of the situation.
