    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was truly best job ever. During my previous internship I felt like a useless person with nothing to do and here I've felt really included. I had an opportunity to take part in webinars to get know the company better. I was able to make bond with fellow interns so even that internship was fully remote experience, I've done a lot of networking! Goldmad Sachs is really welcoming environment and I felt safe and included while working here.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I had weekly feedback sessions with my managers and reached out to my colleagues when in doubt. I've learned a lot from them! Even though I was afraid of code reviews at the beginning, they turned out to be great opportunity to learn new aspects of Java. It was important to me as I've never really used Java in commercial projects, I'm rather a Python type of programmer. Now I feel more confident as a Java dev and want to learn more about stuff like design patterns and Spring framework.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I could call my manager every time I had any doubt. She was so welcoming and sweet, I treated her like a friend of mine. She called me before the internship started and explained every aspect of it. She was supporting during all five weeks I've spent here in Goldman Sachs. Her feedback was insightful and made me a better programmer and collaborator for sure! I hope I will have a chance to work with her again.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was pretty busy actually but I've managed to maintain work-life balance. It was interesting to experience fully remote job for the first time and even though I was afraid at the beginning it turned out great. I've been starting my day with team stand-up. Later, I could either write code or take part in webinars for interns or other workshops. Twice a week, we've been having longer team meeting when we could talk about our daily tasks and reach out for help.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my internship I was supposed to do my own project and working on it was a great adventure. I'm sure it will be used long after my stay here as it's some kind of automation which is useful for all people here. I was working on my own with the team making my code reviews so I can tell it's pretty good solution to learn how to manage your own project and learn how to deploy things to production without fear that something will break because of me.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Skills for life, literally! I've extended my working knowledge of Java beyond the stuff I know from my university. Now I'm more aware while coding in Java. I've also loved working in Kanban and I'm pretty sure I will be using this in my private life as well because, well, it raises my productivity on whole new level. I think my experience from Goldman Sachs will help me be better at university because this insight is extremely helpful.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was great, really! I have not really worked from office - it was fully remote experience during the shortest internship in history! - but the atmosphere within a team was great. And within company as well - even an intern like me could feel that they matter and are included, so that is great. Every person I've met was nice and ready to help me whenever I needed it. Would recommend to everyone!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was organised very well - that is pretty cool if you remember that the situation with the Covid-19 were really unpredictable during these month! Nevertheless, the fully remote experience was great opportunity to learn how the fully remote work looks like. We got an access to all the systems and I, for one, have never experienced any technical difficulties during my stay here. The organisation of meeting was also on point and I cannot complain.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had an opportunity to take part in internal training as well as using popular e-learning platforms, like egghead.io or Pluralsight. Thanks to that, every person willing to learn new stuff was able to do it. It was cool and not so obvious - in my previous company my team didn't really take care of interns so we were bored all summer. But with Goldman, you feel that you can develop yourself and that the company will help you if you stuck.

    Healthcare/Dental

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I know that I will get the offer for next summer internship next year and I'm willing to accept it. Goldman Sachs is the company I would love to work for, because I feel like they care about well-being of their employees. So yeah, future employment prospects within the organisation are very appealing for me! I cannot wait to be back and work with my team once again, and learn even more about good practices in IT and Java.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yeah, we had an opportunity to socialize, there was some events for interns only - virtual of course!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I'm living in Warsaw on daily basis so even if the internship was fully remote experience, I know the cost of living and socialising in the area. Warsaw is not really cheap city but the money Goldman paid us were more than enough to have good quality of life here! What more, there are plenty of cool places to hang out after work really close to the office, so you can socialise after work if you want!

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I have not idea, I'm not a party girl!

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Oh yes, I've been involved in Women Network and LGBTQ Network.
