The Role
I enjoyed my placement experience at GE my team were all very nice and knowledgeable so I felt like I fit in and was supported to further my engineering understanding. There was also a lot of scope in my role to complete other training and projects in addition to my usual role.
My team were amazing and I definitely felt like my opinions and thoughts were listened to and my contributions were respected. Some senior managers outside of my team seemed to value some of interns contributions, but some of them didn't seem to put that much trust in interns.
My mentors/managers were extremely supportive and always gave me time to ask questions and would point me in the right direction to find answers when possible. They also tried to put me in positions to become more important within the team.
My specific role would always change day to day in terms of what I needed to do. However, the ability to get involved with extra projects that I could work on along side allowed me to have a fairly constant workload.
I was given quite a lot of responsibility which at the start I struggled with but got used to and enjoyed as I felt I was contributing to the company as a whole.
I haven't yet returned to university but I managed to develop a whole host of transferable skills as well as engineering knowledge which I feel will be valuable.
The Company
My office was friendly and I was sat with my managers and some other more senior engineers and we all got on really well.
My placement was very well organised, there were requirements we had to meet with clear deadlines and there were always opportunities for help.
At the start I had a 3 week handover with the person I was taking over from which was so valuable. We had in person training every other week, we had an online system where we could do extra training courses and we had the ability to shadow other roles when we could fit it around our normal responsibilities.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare/Dental
I decided that the aviation industry wasn't really something I wanted to go into but I would consider applying for jobs in other parts of GE.
The Culture
We had 40+ interns working at our site so the social scene was quite good.
Cardiff is quite a cheap city to live in.
Cardiff is close so if you live there the night life is alright.
There were some activities outside of work.
