    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was good because there was a lot to learn regarding marketing. It's a great opportunity for people who want to improve their skills, especially their writing as blogging is a big part of the role. I enjoyed it because I learnt stuff but other than working hard, there's not much fun at the office since it's purely work-orientated.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The office vibe is just typical, everyone's sat at their desk on their laptops working hard and not talking much except for here and there. My colleagues are a pretty good bunch, they're nice, we've gone for lunch as a group a few times and they're helpful whenever I ask questions and need guidance. There's another team in another office who we interact with over Skype and they're friendly too.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Whenever I need help, I don't hold back from asking since that's the way to learn during an internship. The staff are really helpful even if I ask 50 questions in a day or need guidance, they will find time to help me or refer me to someone who can.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Fairly busy, even when not being asked to do something, we're just meant to go through the database to find images to blog about. The aim is to write 3/4 blogs a day which is a lot but I only did 1/2 each day since I did other tasks alongside it such as social media, uploading items to the data (there were a lot), sending out emails among other tasks.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At the beginning, not much since it was blogging orientated which I enjoyed and it helped get familiar with company even though I got lost at times regarding what to write. We had meetings where we discussed what we wanted to do and I asked for more roles which were granted, especially working in other departments.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Since I did a marketing degree, this internship definitely helped. I improved my blogging skills, learnt how to use wordpress properly (which is pretty hard to get leading searches), some marketing strategies and i which are needed in the business. Also, learnt things I never thought I would such as what fabrics are used for certain items and got a feel for manufacturing costs.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Average, not super outgoing and constantly talking but not completely dull either where we stared at our computer like zombies. It was decent, like I stated before, it is a more work orientated place so not a place to work if you want to chill half the time. The odm group is comfortable for a placement/internship.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Intern china set up everything from the interviews, communication between the company and I, arriving to China, being taken to work on the first day, etc. They were helpful but we didn't know much about our placements. It was not too big of an issue though. It just depends how independent and comfortable you are which varies on the level of support needed for organisation.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company definitely were interested in giving us responsibility and wanted to know what we were seeking too. This allowed them to give me tasks which I wanted to do and learn what I came here to learn. They are pretty busy though, so it did not always happen straight away but eventually others would assist and guide me.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • We are told from the beginning that there is a possible chance of employment at the end of the internship, so we are aware of that. The company asked me if I would be interested depending on how the internship goes, and decided to give me more responsibilities to get a full feel for a full time role. So, if you do well and like the job then there is a high chance.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The internship groups are quite big and at the beginning, there's a couple free days to settle in and group events to socialise so it's a good way to befriend others. We're in flats of 2/3 people which also helps. There is a group dinner every Thursday, some plans on the weekend if you don't want to do stuff alone and trips to other cities every second weekend. The interns usually plan outings too so there's a lot to do.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It depends on the lifestyle of the person, getting a bus to work in the morning is only 1 yuan but that's if you are ok with rush hour and being stuffed onto a bus. For taxis, it would cost more depending on how far you live, there is a good amount of shops, restaurants and bubble tea places nearby so finding good priced food isn't hard to find. Finding western food would be more difficult and pricey. Haven't socialised much around this area since it's around 45 mins away from where I live and it's dark by the time I get out.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Haven't been to any clubs or night life places but found a couple of good places I would like to check out. The other interns go out to bars or clubs 2/3 times per week roughly so there is a good choice and we're told of events coming up if we want to join in.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Internchina definitely planned many opportunities along with the other interns or just planning outings myself. Zhuhai is a nice city and there is a lot to check out depending on what you like, it just depends on how well you can balance work and socialising. I'd love to do more but I tire by the end of the work day, grab dinner and go back to the flat most days otherwise I won't get enough rest for the next day.
