The Role
I liked that I was put in an area that aligned with my interests. Other colleagues are friendly enough to meet with interns and tell you about other parts of the firm. There are lots of intern events which were fun. The new office is lovely. I enjoyed the training part of the internship and I was given interesting work to do. That said, there was definitely a lot of learning by myself which had its challenges.
They let me take part in meetings and conference calls and I could always ask questions afterwards if something was unclear. This made me feel valued. I was given interesting work which meant they valued my contribution. At the end they asked for sessions and presentations on my work meaning my contribution was valued.
I was given some support and guidance, but there was a lot of self learning. The support and guidance was different to learning at university because they can just give a hint or something to look into. Often you're working on problems that they themselves don't know how to solve immediately without looking into it and therefore they can only give pointers. Sometimes there's only one person who can actually help you with your specific issue, but they're too busy, so you have to wait until the evening.
Very busy, often I had to work longer hours than expected just to get the work done. There were lots of meetings and discussions and intern events. There was always something to do or people to meet. I enjoyed having lots to do because it was more engaging and interesting.
I was given interesting and important work but it was less time pressured because they can't give critical work to interns. You're given the responsibility to manage your time and figure out when to ask for help and when to work things out by yourself.
You definitely gain good working habits and regulation due to the structured time management. You learn to value your time more as you have less spare time. The learning experience is completely different and so you appreciate university learning more.
The Company
Nice atmosphere, people bring food for the team, sometimes joking around, sometimes serious. The new office has a lot of light in and it's definitely a more positive atmosphere.
Well structured, always have things to do, a project to work on throughout.
They usually have a place waiting for you at the end if you perform well. So they want to make the investment in you so that you can help them and return full time. This means they are actually interested in building a career for you.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Good. You can return in your team or find other teams which are more suitable/align with your interests.
The Culture
Good social scene, meeting for lunch and definitely a good amount of time with fellow interns.
