    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It had everything an internship should have. Many networking events, learning opportunities and development of applications that bring real business value as part of a big team. The team environment was great, everyone was helpful and I got to learn all about the application my team is developing. Although my work involved developing an internal facing application, it was certain that it will bring value to the whole team.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team has helped me greatly in the development process and has invited me to different meetings that I might find interesting. It felt as if I was part of the team the whole time.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was answered whenever I had any questions and was directed to useful resources at the beginning

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I had the freedom to choose how I approach my work and plan everything accordingly. I had an openended project that was not meant to be finished in 10 weeks as the internship went so I could work as much as I wished every day.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I had to plan the project, gather requirements and decide how to approach it, together with my client. After I had to priorities everything myself and communicate with the client when needed. I had the freedom of how and what to do as long as I held it up to the team's standard.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have received valuable experience in planning and running a project, developing software by using an agile approach, using the latest frameworks and tools and communication with other team members. I am certain it will assist me in my degree and any work I do beyond university. One important aspect I have learnt about that you are not taught in university is the use of pipelines and environments to deliver projects.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Relaxed, dress code was business-smart but people could come in sports wear as well without raising any eye brows in my team.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Most of the paperwork was done online so it was pretty seamless. Communication was on point, with a constant flow of emails to remind of upcoming tasks.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The whole experience was a valuable training experience as I had not worked with any of the technologies I did before.

  • The organisation is currently expanding in my area and has probably the biggest range of software opportunities in the market.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • With over 100 fellow interns I had a wide range to choose from and with the many social events at work, I could always meet new interns. After-work socials were always presented to everyone who wished to join.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Perhaps one of the cheapest big cities in the UK. Affordable housing with decent food prices. Perhaps the only expensive prices were for alcoholic drinks due to country-wide taxes.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Most clubs were not as impressive and have high entrance prices for their value.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • My team always organised outside work sport activities such as running together and after-work drinks on Fridays. As well as many other social opportunities with fellow interns and all the great places to visit in Glasgow.
