    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a very enjoyable experience. The actuarial team made me feel very welcome, all taking time to go over insurance terms with me and make sure I fully understood the work I was doing. I learnt a lot about the industry and the internship helped me decide that an actuarial career was for me.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was invited to after work drinks and socials by my team. My team members were keen to invite me to lunch with them to get to know each other better which was lovely. I was also invited to an actuarial rounders game in Hyde Park which I was unfortunately unable to attend.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had regular meetings with my line manager who provided feedback from the managers in the teams that I had been working in. One of my team managers also went for a coffee with me and chatted with me about my progress within the team and offered advice for the future.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I had a good level of work throughout the internship. If I ever finished my task I could say to someone that I had some spare time and they would give me something to do, even just helping with presentations for the chief actuary's staff or tidying up spreadsheets for the team.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a good amount of responsibility, I never felt like I was given too much or too little. I was able to get involved on a large number of interesting projects and develop my technical skills in Excel and VBA which has been very useful in applying for graduate schemes.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I did not study an Actuarial based degree but completing this internship did give me the confidence and knowledge about the insurance industry to know I wanted to complete an Actuarial graduate scheme and a financial/actuarial related masters instead of returning to the 4th year of my MPhys degree at uni.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere was very friendly, the teams I was working with let me know that I was always welcome to ask questions about the work I was doing. There was a hot-desking system which meant I was able to meet new people everyday within the actuarial and underwriting teams.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The work placement was very well organised with a 2.5 day induction followed by starting the work very soon after. I was able to take part in a CSR project which enabled me to get to know other interns and colleagues within the company and widen my network at AIG.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was a 2.5 induction which involved a general introduction to Insurance and a day on developing my personal brand with an expert. This was a very interesting day as I was able to gain more confidence in speaking publicly and I built relationships with the other interns on the programme. I think that a role specific training session could have been beneficial also, e.g. Excel/VBA crash course etc.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I had an end of internship meeting with my line manager towards the end of August. They informed me that based on my progress they would be happy to invite me back for the graduate programme if they are able to. I was informed I would know by September. Unfortunately this was delayed so I applied elsewhere and accepted another position.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The mini golf mid internship event was very fun and a great opportunity to connect with the other interns on the programme. We got free food and drinks and a round on the crazy golf pitch. There were also a number of opportunities for team lunches and after work drinks.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is very expensive, most of the interns had London connections and stayed with family or friends. I was a student at a London university so I was able to continue renting over the summer but I think that without that it could have been tricker and more expensive to live there.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London is very expensive but there were a number of opportunities to go out after work. We were in the heart of the city with a large number of clubs and bars nearby. Personally I didn't go on that many late nights but we did have some after work drinks which was very fun.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I was invited to an Actuarial rounders match in Hyde Park which unfortunately I was unable to attend but it sounded like great fun. There were also a number of after work drinks session and opportunities to work with the CSR charity project we were working on over the summer.

    4/5
