    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my 10 week internship at Adam & Co Edinburgh doing Private Banking with Relationship Management. I got to meet people from all areas of the business and got given substantial responsibility. We had Corporate Social Responsbility challenges to raise money for charities in groups across areas- which was good to work on team work. We also had sustainability challenges to raise eco-friendly awareness.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were extremely welcoming, although at the start of the internship they were all very busy as it is summer holidays so they were slightly short staffed, but after the first few weeks of induction I got given more work and they trusted me as I completed more and more tasks with ease as they willingly gave me more help.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My actual line manager was not based in the Edinburgh office but in London so I only saw them when we went down for Credit training. But I had an Edinburgh manager who was great- I wasn't very busy at the start and they noticed this, after having a meeting with them and telling them about how I wanted more worked etc they were willing to help and put me in touch with the right people.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • As previously described, I was not very busy at the start but only because we had inductions and training in Edinburgh and London. Aswell as online company learning tests! But after a few weeks I got more work given to me and more responsibility. I had my own project to work on during the latter weeks for my presentation.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was trusted with personal client information and given responsibility with regards to speaking with clients over the phone and engaging with them at client meetings. I would send emails and directly interact with clients- so this was a lot of responsibility. This trust had to be earned, as you would expect, so I didn't have much to do in the first three/four weeks.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I fully understood the importance of client confidentiality and how the new GDPR affects the working world overall and individually as a company. I also learnt about communication and how to speak to both clients and colleagues, which I did not previously understand but can definitely be used in future jobs.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I wouldn't say it was a bad office, there just weren't many events we did all together. So although the people were lovely it was quite quiet.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organised parts include: We had three days of inductions meeting everyone from all over the UK on RBS summer internships and our English counterparts who were working in Coutts. We then travelled to London for training for the systems we would use on a day-to-day basis. I was invited to client meetings which were put in the diary in advance so I helped the PB prepare for them. Non-organised parts include: About 3/4 weeks in I didn't have much to do and was given odd jobs randomly but as the weeks progressed it improved and became more organised.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They don't invest much development into interns, but as a graduate they will put you through all your Private Banking exams etc which is brilliant. Overall as a company, they feel like they really care about you as you get to know people who you work around quite well and it is obvious they are very inclusive.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would like to work with Adam & Company in the future- the internship has been really eye-opening and interesting.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • All the interns have a group chat and go on nights out together!

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Edinburgh is expensive during August because of the fringe but apart from that relatively good prices for food/drinks etc.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Cracking! I'm at university in Edinburgh so have lived here for 3 years and I love the nights out- especially when all the interns get together and meet up to go out! World cup was on during the internship so we would all watch that together in the evenings. Also created a smaller group for the St Andrew Square office and we go for drinks etc regularly.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not as many as London counterparts down in Coutts- they seemed to have more work related events on, but we still had a few grad/intern events in Edinburgh. We had some events such as ping pong evenings, Edinburgh Young Professionals parties and Women in Finance business corporate events that we were invited to.
