About You
Overall, I enjoyed the content that was shown during the Spring Into Technology program. The main things I enjoyed were: - Coding Challenges - A Light UX Workshop - Shadowing of employees The shadowing help me get an insight into how people in the real world operated, and to see if my mindset and skills would've been a good fit for the company.
All of the staff who I spoke to during the brief networking events and social evenings were very kind and honest about what they did at JP Morgan, and how they did them. Nobody I spoke to was very negative or off-putting during my time, as such, I have nothing but kudos for the staff who volunteered for the event.
The staff who volunteered were very open to questions and so it was very easy to get help if you were wondering about future possibilities (Internships, Industrial placements). There was an opportunity at most times during the event to ask members of staff about their day to day work life. The HR representative who helped organise the event was very clear when asked questions, and gave answers in a concise way.
I don't feel that the information I received would necessarily help me in my degree, purely due to the nature of the event, however, the answers I got from the staff and volunteers for the event have helped me hugely in deciding my future career path. There were small lecture type sessions about development methodologies and Cyber Security that were also interesting as Computer Science student.
The Company
The structure was very clear cut and concise, we were given agendas for our 3 days at the JP Morgan building. It was nice to have a chance to talk to people from other universities and countries. There were a lot of people - to the point where we needed 2 different locations - so it would've been good to meet them more.
It was a very fun, interesting time at the offices. The students like me who were there were very like-minded, there was no negativity during my entire time, and I would very much recommend anyone who wants an insight into the world of Technology or even Banking, to apply for this program.
During certain challenges and sessions, there were mentors and scoring systems created to rate us based on how well we worked and melted together as a team. This was useful because it gave us an opportunity to see how someone with a Technology related job thought we worked as a team.
The Spring Into Technology program had two different Shadowing sessions, both of which were very useful because we got to interact with real employees of the firm, as well as see how the company worked at a grass roots level. The employees answered all of my questions about what it's like to work there, if they enjoyed it, and how their recruitment went.
I asked many of the employees about how the company operated and they all gave similar if not the same answer. This was good created an idea of how the company would work if I were to be there. The organisers of the event also spoke about how the company operated on a recruitment and management level.
It was my first event of this type so I can't make too much of a judgement, however, the content and sessions that we were given was very interesting and the people who delivered it were very passionate about their line of work. The questions I asked about the company's internal workings, and peoples day-to-day work life, helped form my opinions.
Everything Else
This is not applicable to me. However there were individuals in the event from a variety of countries, all of whom were supplied with expenses for their travel, be that a train journey of airplane flight. I didn't hear anyone complain about being out of pocket from trying to get to the event.
During the breaks there were employees who had volunteered for the coding challenges and the small sessions. They were all open to questions, nice, honest, and listened when you were talking to them. There was nobody who I had a negative or even slightly negative interaction with. Everyone I spoke to answered questions concisely and clearly.
During the program, there were several breaks and social events. One of which was a trip to the bowling to play with the other people who were invited to the sessions. This helped break the ice for the second and third day of activities. There was also a lunch with senior members of staff on the final day.
Speaking to the employees, some mentioned that there are societies within the organisation different activities. Some also spoke about some training programs that employees can take in their own personal time to try and gain some new skills and develop their old ones. This was evident during the shadowing as we could see some of the courses available to staff.
Absolutely. I have zero major complaints about this program, it was very fun, I made new friends from other universities, it gave me a good insight into the company, and it helped for my opinions for my future career path, as well as future opportunities for students. It was an experience I'll remember from my time in academia,
