The Role
I profoundly enjoyed my internship and believe it gave me the opportunity to know the company as much as it gave GS the opportunity to know me. I felt the experience was very practical with a high degree of exposure not only to senior GS management but to a variety of live transactions which clarified many misconceptions I had about the practical aspects of this industry.
Colleagues will value you no matter their level of seniority. GS's trademark flat hierarchy gave me the opportunity to work with colleagues at all levels of the value chain and to learn from their trajectories. Everybody is aware you are just starting your professional journey and they do not expect you to be an expert. They value your willingness, tenacity, drive and sense of teamwork.
I was given guidance to the extent that I truly needed it. This means I was given the guidance I needed to be efficient, but I was also given the opportunity to try to figure things out on my own and to apply my critical and problem solving skills when appropriate. In this way I learnt industry best practises but while also embarking on a very steep learning curve and developing crucial skills on my own.
Very busy. Its a busy industry but its very feasible.
A lot. I believe at Goldman you are responsible for making your own opportunities. I was given a significant level of responsibility because I demonstrated my willingness to contribute to the teams efforts and to learn as much as I could.
Currently as an MSc student I can confirm that what I learnt during my internship has allowed me to better understand and appreciate what I am now being taught.
The Company
We treated the work with all the seriousness it was due but we had a lot of fun in the process. If you enjoy learning continuously and are not afraid to put in the work you will always have fun in this job.
Very well organised. We had a variety of speaker series which gave us significant exposure to senior leaders at the firm as well as a rotational program which enables one to attain a truly holistic view of the IBD division.
Significantly. From formal programs to the efforts my colleagues made to develop me I felt the firm had taken a real interest in my success.
