    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was really hard at first to get used to the environment. Having to go to work every day from 10:00 to 18:00 - Monday to Friday, it was a struggle at first for me. But after I got used to being at the office, got used to my colleagues I found it to be a great experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • At first I didn’t have much contact with others, because I was considered a trainee for the first month, so there were only two people I communicated with - my line manager and the secretary. But after a while when I started to do more work - I had a feeling i am part of the team, because I was invited to the staff night outs and parties.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was supervised at all times during my first month. I was mentored by my line manager who was keeping an eye on me all day. My computer was just opposite his computer, so it was really easy for him to communicate with me and help if i was struggling with a task or a job.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • If I have to rate my business on average I would say 6.0/10.0.
I wasn’t really busy all the time, but there were some times when I had to take a lot more work and stay longer than my usual office hours, but that’s understandable, as I know the work had to be done anyway.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I wasn’t responsible for something big, but all my responsibilities were to answer the company’s support email, which wasn’t a hard task, but sometimes I had to deal with some really angry customers and I had to stay calm at all times. But in terms of responsibilities - my job wasn’t one that I had to be responsible for a lot of things.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have a feeling that the skills that I learned while working for that company helped me to realize better who i am, what i am capable of and what i can work on in the future. I know that it will take time for me to change, but I know what i need to work on. And the tasks I did every day helped me to build my communication skills.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • In general the atmosphere was friendly. Everyone was friends with each other, we often went out for food or drinks. We had at least once a month - a staff lunch at a nearby restaurant. It was pretty relaxed and it was easy to fit in and be part of the team thanks to the atmosphere in the office.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I would say - it wasn’t really well organized but not in the bad way. It’s just because I was their first intern and they hadn’t established the program i had to work on. But everything was happening on the go and I had an amazing line manager who made sure I know everything and understand everything before i started working

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company had me trained for about 3 weeks on all the aspects I was going to work on. I knew almost everything about the company for these 3 weeks, so it was really easy for me to work after the training period. I was trained how to answer the phone, how to correctly handle a hard situation/customer via e-mail and such.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • We never talked about future employment, but because they know me so well and I know them and the company so well - I am sure it won’t be really hard to continue working for them after graduation. And they offer really good salaries for people who graduated from a European/UK University.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Just because I was the very first intern they had - most of the people that worked there didn’t have any experience with interns and treated me like a full worker, which was beneficial for me. After the second month there was a new internet and he was a software engineer, so it became easier for me. He came from another UK University.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living was 2.5x times lower than the one in Coventry(where I study).
It was based in Sofia, which is Bulgaria’s capital and largest city. There is a lot to do and going on in Sofia all year round. There are a lot of universities, so that means a lot of young people in the area and it is really cool to live in Sofia, because it is cheap, it is safe and you have plenty of choices for your free time.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As I previously said, Sofia is the largest city of Bulgaria and there are so many night clubs, bars, discos and even there is a whole neighbourhood called Student city where most of the students live and study. There are more than 10 clubs in that area and so many bars and cafes. So night life in Sofia is great!

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, plenty. The company I worked for helped some camps for stray dogs. They not only invested and donated money in them, but also went to help, to organize it and to make it more livable for the dogs. They also helped cure dogs, take them to the vet and gave them showers. Also we participated in a marathon while I worked there.
