    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was a really rewarding experience. At Goldman you can really use your efforts and your time to improve processes, and whatever you do will always be recognised and will be given credit. Moreover, interacting with hard working and like-minded people such as Goldman Sachs' employees represents the best way to enhance your soft skills

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • If you are recognised as a trustable and genuine person, your colleagues will start giving you responsibilities and will make you feel valuable since day 1. Colleagues in my team made it their priority to make me feel included and valuable in the division, assigning me long term projects and teaching me everything they could

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My colleagues were always there for me, explaining each single detail or process I wasn’t fully aware of. The attention Goldman puts in training people and make employees collaborate among themselves is the main reason for its competitive advantage, and informal catching-up sessions as well as feedback sessions with supervisors and colleagues are the best way to manage expectations for the internship

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • A really important part of the job at GS is being able to recognise where you have some spare time to work on long-term projects. During the internship you are likely to be assigned 2-3 long term projects, and nobody will tell you when it is the right time to work on them. Thus, leverage on the free time to get those things done because you never know what’s coming the next day

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The amount of responsibilities given at GS from day 1 is huge. Although it may feel overwhelming at first, your colleagues are there to help you and to collaborate and it is really rewarding to sensibly contribute to the team/the division’s daily workload. Moreover, the higher the bar of expectations you manage to set, the higher will be the amount of responsibilities you will have

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • In addition to the more technical skills, which are coming in handy during my master, a big part of the skills learnt is related to soft skills. You learn how to interact with people and how to present information in the most valuable way. You also learn to always give your contribution and that hard work pays high dividends

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • In my division, everyone was happy to be there and keen to do his job. Moreover, at GS, informal catching-up sessions with colleagues are the best way to keep in touch and to take a break from work. In addition, the really flat environment of the company pushes you to interact with senior management, which are there to help you get the most out of the experience

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The work done by the HCM division at Goldman Sachs for setting up the internship was amazing. We had on average one event per day, which was either a training session or a networking event, in which we were able to get in touch with people from other areas of the firm

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were on average 4 divisions-specific trainings per week, in which a member of the division who’s an expert about a subject would present the in front of all the colleagues and would answer all the possible questions about the subject. As an intern who developed a particular interest for a specific topic, I was given the opportunity to hold a training for my division

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I received an offer to return as a Full time analyst starting from summer 2018

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • At Goldman Sachs, interns know that the competition is not between themselves. In our case, we supported each other and helped each other, not only within a division but also across different divisions. The general idea is that the best way to succeed is to cooperate with interns as well. GS is not likely to set a fixed ratio of people who join the firm. Rather, it will take in all interns who manage to reach expectations

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area around GS in London is full of pubs and restaurants where employees go after-work. The cost is not excessive, considering London's average price levels. Nevertheless the accomodation costs, if you want to live within walking distance from the office, is pretty high, at around 350 ppw. The general recommendation is to live outside of the centre and take the tube to work

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The Nightlife around Fleet Street is really nice. The high number of places and restaurants in the area gives you the possibility to spend some time relaxing after a full week of work.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Goldman Sachs gives you the chance to find a nice work/life balance. Moreover, the opportunities to get involved in volunteering and sport activities in London (and also with GS) are enormous. Moreover, GS organized a volunteering day during the summer internship.ppw
