    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I very much enjoyed my time here at JP Morgan. The people were very welcoming and always willing to help whenever I needed it. It is amazing how passionate the individuals here at JP Morgan are about their jobs and how insightful it is to hear from employees within my team and in other lines of business. It was very exciting to also have different events organised by JP Morgan for the interns to get involved in to allow us to build a network as well as meet other interns.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was welcomed warmly by my colleagues and it was clear that they were genuinely appreciative of the work that the interns do. Aside from my day to day role, my team included me in additional projects they thought I might be interested in. Furthermore, I was invited to after work events like team dinners, which made me feel like a valued member of the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Despite the senior nature of my manager’s role (VP) and having a hectic schedule, she managed to spend 1 hour weekly understanding my concerns and providing feedback on my work. Apart from my weekly meeting updates, we also had informal chats concerning my future (inside and outside the firm), my further education and building my network within the firm.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the large amount of information to process in only a 10 week period, I was very busy on a day-to-day basis and if there was a moment I had spare, I would spend networking or seeking out additional work. During the internship, I did learn to manage my time more effectively, which meant that I did not feel as overwhelmed by the work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a huge amount of responsibility during my time at JP Morgan and was handed over very important weekly tasks alongside the projects that needed to be undertaken by me throughout my internship. In any instance I tried to take over any work that I possibly could from my colleagues to make their days a little less stressful.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I developed at JP Morgan are invaluable and I believe to be life long skills. I have already found that some of the skills learnt, such as time management and motivation, have already benefited me since returning to University. I realised the importance of networking alongside your job role and the importance of communicating with colleagues and team members in an effective and polite manner.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the bank is really supportive and motivating. The people in JP Morgan are very encouraging and helpful. My team especially was very positive, helpful and understanding. We regularly went for drinks on the floor, either for someone’s promotion, or internal mobility or just general socials organised by the human resources. The senior management was approachable and honest about their careers and work.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised. There was a good social event organised for our first day, middle of our internship and the end of our internship to allow us to network and meet other interns. Networking events and socials were also organised throughout our internship to allow us to be exposed to different aspects of the firm.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • It was clear to see how much time and energy that JP Morgan has invested in the internship programme. Before joining, I was required to complete online training, which provided a good base knowledge for joining the company. There were multiple trainings organised for all the interns across lines of businesses to gained a more nuance picture of the business. I found these training to be very useful. The senior management speaker series was also really beneficial as we got to hear from senior leaders about their career progression.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future career prospects at JP Morgan are very strong. The internship demonstrated to me what it would be like to work at the firm as a full time employee. The atmosphere is was buzzy, the people are warm and welcoming and the location is ideal. I am hoping to be given a place on the graduate programme.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were plenty of opportunities to network and interact with other interns and graduates at JP Morgan. It was not just interns in our line of business, but also interns from across the firm in multiple areas and businesses, so it was a good chance to find out about different business functions. We would often go for drinks after work or socialise during our lunch breaks.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Being based in London, high cost of living is to be expected. Due to the corporate nature of Canary Wharf, it is near impossible to afford to rent here, and I wouldn’t recommend doing so either as it can be a bit soulless on the weekend. However, if you do your research, there are much more affordable areas in East London, such as Stratford and Canada Water. Costs of socialising are also high, however the salary received generously reflects high cost of living.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Many bars and restaurants nearby, offering a wider range of options. It is also really quick to get to Central London should you want more variety and to escape the 'corporate' bubble.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Multiple Business Resource groups to get involved in, ranging in topics. There are also a number of sports teams to get involved in.
