    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have really enjoyed the opportunity the internship at LBG has provided me. It has been a privilege to work at such a renowned company and to have had the opportunity during my 10 weeks to add some value to the group. I have thoroughly enjoyed being given responsibility and believe I have responded well to the challenges proposed and would love to continue to develop a career with the group.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I have not been isolated or made to feel like an outcast from the team and have been continuously kept in the loop. Being assigned my own project I have had to work with various people and the work that I complete I believe is valued by my colleagues. However, I do believe that there is an awareness that I am only here for 10 weeks, I do not have as much experience and I will be moving on soon which is justifiable.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager has been brilliant in helping me settle in and develop my skills and knowledge throughout the internship. Where he has given me tasks we have had regular catch ups and he has advised me on the best way to present data and what information is necessary to include. My colleagues in the team have also been great support - reading over deep dives and making suggestions over formatting.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Balance has been perfectly managed for me since the first day. I have never felt extremely pushed for time but also have never been sat around with nothing to do. I was assigned an overall project to manage and complete during my time here which I have been able to work on since day 1, with little tasks being added to my schedule along the way. Meetings with different stake holders has also kept me at a perfect balance.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • In comparison to what I perceived my internship would be I have been given a considerable amount of responsibility. I came with the expectation that I would do a lot of shadowing and it has really been the opposite. I have been helped in finding my feet by very much in the manner that I should do that myself - which I am very happy to do. I have thoroughly enjoyed being handed tasks that might create changes in the LBG Insurance business which may be applied by the customer. The most important thing for my during this internship has been to add value, and I can say that I have been able to do so.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Everything I have learnt during this experience will become extremely valuable to my degree and my future career. My dissertation topic is in relation to Flood Re and I have been able to access a database and contacts that will be very useful to me so that I complete the task. In my career beyond, the most important thing this internship offered was learning that insurance is the right industry for me. My presentation, summarising (Keeping it simple), charity skills, Microsoft capabilities have all improved since this internship.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Generally always a positive friendly atmosphere with jokes and banter flying around the office. A real sense of togetherness with everyone happy to chip in with work if someone is under the thumb. It was very rare that there was a negative atmosphere, and whenever there was there was always attempts to bring it back up again. I have been impressed by the office atmosphere and would be very happy to work here.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship for myself had been very well organised and structured. I have been aware since day 1 of what is expected of me, involved in weekly trading updates, weekly team meetings and a weekly one to one with my line manager which has been extremely valuable to me. I was assigned a task from the start and have been working to this throughout. I have also been involved in other tasks which could be classed as branches of my overall product.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • It was apparent from the intern induction event down in London that this is clearly a scheme that is very important to the most senior employees within the group. With Antonio Lorenzo, head of insurance, attending and presenting at the event what he wanted us to achieve from this experience really stood out to me and showed me how valued as interns we are. I believe the 10 weeks that the firm has invested in me shows that they would like interns, hopefully like myself, to develop a career with the group.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It is my overall goal from this placement to achieve a position on the graduate scheme. Working as a grad at a reputable company like Lloyds Banking Group would really stand my career development in good stead. Also, LBG are very pro-career development within the group so I would be extremely happy that if post-grad I was on the right path to building a long term career in the group.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Even though my flat is very quite with only one other person in there I have still managed to make friends for life on this internship. The induction day encouraged us to meet people within the halls but the social scene has really thrived since then. I can safely say I have not been bored or felt lonely during the course of this internship which is extremely important to me.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living was reasonable, however I have brought my car up and the student halls we were staying in had no offer of affordable parking so I have had to leave my car on the other side of the city which is frustrating. Socialising is relatively cheap as well, the price of a pint for example I would deem is standard and there aren't London prices in Leeds so I have been able to afford to socialise well.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Leeds has a notoriously good nightlife and it hasn't failed to live up to its reputation.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not that many. Charity cannot really be classed as outside of work and no one had any offer of sports clubs in the halls.
