The Role
I really enjoyed my internship with BDO. My colleagues and manager were friendly and great and BDO had a really welcoming and open work environment.
I worked in private tax and was given tasks to complete straightaway with private tax returns so that within 1-2 weeks I was completing tax returns independently. Any problems that I did come across, the people sitting around me were more than happy to help. The pod that I was with were amazing, so welcoming and kept me occupied with work so I was never left doing nothing.
Whenever I needed help, they were there to answer them and give me support. Before any meetings that I attended, my manager would sit with me and discuss with me the background to the meeting so that I could keep up with the information discussed and knew what was going on- I really appreciated this, it showed that they were keen to teach me.
Relatively busy, I always had work to do but never to the point where it was overwhelming.
I was given responsibility from the start with little tasks, gradually as I got more confident with these then I'd be given more responsibility so that then soon enough I was completing tax returns on my own. Being able to attend meetings was also an amazing opportunity, being involved in the consultation part of tax was a great insight into potential future career opportunities in tax
Skills that I developed were specific to the tax department that I was in. So, although not that helpful to my geography degree, it will be particularly useful when I go back to working there and for general tax knowledge.
The Company
The office was open plan which really helped with creating a welcoming, friendly atmosphere to the office. By the time I had finished my internship I had gotten to know a great deal of people in the tax department. Being introduced to everyone in the tax department on my first day was also really nice, getting to know people.
The overall internship was set up and organised well. The structure of having a 4 day training course, 5 weeks in the office and then the last 2 days in London to round up the internship worked really well in my opinion. The work that I did in my local office was also organised well and was challenging but also rewarding
BDO did put in a lot of effort into our personal training and development from the beginning with the 4 day introduction and training course in Birmingham at the start of the internship. This was great as we got to know all the other interns in the UK for both tax and audit. The training courses as well provided a solid introduction into tax

I really enjoyed my internship with BDO. I really liked the people that I got to work with and know, as well as all the other interns that I met in Birmingham and London. I enjoyed the work that I did at BDO and the meetings that I attended were also really interesting. So, I have accepted the grad job offer with them
The Culture
I think the social scene at BDO was great. The audit team had a charity month so there were various social events like a pub quiz integrated with end of month drinks. The interns also had a fundraising project to do while working at BDO, which meant that we organised social events too such as a pool tournament. The colleagues really got on well, many lunches and drinks were organised during my time there
I live in Birmingham so I was able to stay at home during my internship. Although cost of bus fare is relatively cheap at £60 for a month's worth. But the cost of socialising, the food and drinks are moderate. Not the cheapest, but not London prices either which is great.
I love the Birmingham nightlife. It is great, vibrant and varied. Birmingham is a huge city, but in the city centre itself everything is in walking distance and there are many various pubs, bars and clubs to suit whatever people fancy. BDO is pretty much near the centre of town, making it an ideal location to easily go to the pub after work
BDO did run a national football tournament in Liverpool on one of the weekends during the internship which the interns were invited too. Unfortunately, I couldn't go but it sounded like an amazing event to attend. Other than that though, it didn't seem like there were many sport clubs apart from football. But there were plenty of opportunities to get involved with eating and drinking.
