    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really enjoyed my time here! Was made to feel like an actual employee from the get-go and was given real responsibility from the start. The learning curve was steep but beneficial and my intern class was great. There were on-the-job learning opportunities as well as structured insight sessions on various other areas of the Bank.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued and have been treated as an important member of the team. You have responsibility over functions and projects that contribute towards the banks functioning. My colleagues offered great support and were always happy to answer any question I had and assist me in difficult times. The team socials are great too!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had weekly catch-ups with my manager who gave me feedback on some of the projects I was working on. There's a strong feedback culture here at Goldman Sachs so feedback is given warranted or unwarranted and this is great for development.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The mornings for me are busy with set reporting deadlines and this is something that you have to be mindful of when agreeing to meetings and other session. On the whole I was busy but never overworked. I enjoy having things to do, so for me this was a bonus! You really learn how to effectively manage your time and prioritize - a great skill for the future.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot! The tasks given to me had real-life impact. I was working on projects and tasks that had an internal and external affect. It was great to have a project that I had to work on for the duration of my 10 weeks as well as day-to-day tasks to perform.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The learning curve here at GS is steep, but this is extremely beneficial. My knowledge of the business and industry as a whole has increased in leaps and bounds. I have also had opportunities to develop some soft skills like communication, how to keep people involved and presentation skills. These are all transferable skills that I will take with me to university and back into the world of work.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office is great. Everyone is really friendly and always willing to lend a hand. The office is open plan meaning that other teams are easily accessible. We also have a hot-desk way of working, so you can essentially sit anywhere. This increases flexibility and you're ability to converse with different people each day.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was really well organised as our Human Resources team had planned a lot of sessions for us that were either business related or skill enhancers. It was a great opportunity to learn about other parts of the business as well as your own functions. It was also great to interact with your intern cohort during these sessions.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm invests in you a lot. They train you on functions they expect their analysts to perform and ensure you have enough support to perform them on an individual basis. The firm really want you as an individual to find your area of best fit and are very supportive when it comes to internal mobility.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • For me a graduate job at Goldman would be ideal. We're yet to find out if we've been offered one but my hopes are nonetheless high. The culture here is great and the people are intelligent and friendly. Its a great place to start your career, grow and develop with many making the transition from Analyst to MD.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes! We had a group chat which really eased communication of various socials or events that were happening. The opportunity to go for drinks on a Friday or a Thursday (which you'll find is common in the City) were always available. We had networking events scheduled into our programme too, which were always fun.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Its the City so as expected it was relatively expensive. However at Goldman you are compensated well for your hard-work and therefore able to afford the cost of living and socializing. I was fortunate to live at home so I only had to pay for travel, which again was expensive but that's London for you.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are a lot of bars and chic pubs in the City. The nightlife is great and always buzzing with various other firms out. The scene is young and fresh and there is always somewhere to go. The 24h tube on the weekends also makes it very easy to get around London, you'll never be short of something to do.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, We had a Community Team Works Day which was great fun! You spent the day alongside the rest of your intern cohort doing great work for the community. We ended up cleaning an area of the River Thames, so the wellies went on and so did the gloves. Everyone mucked in and it was great to have a break from the City office life.
