    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my placement at AZ, primarily due to the relaxed working environment and the freedom to be able to innovate within the individual project.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The internship is based around an independent project therefore work-based interactions with colleagues were limited. However, the importance of the project and how it fits in to future work was emphaised regularly.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support and guidance was available whenever required, and colleagues with a relevant skillset were always willing to give advise on your project even if they were not a stakeholder in your project.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Busy with work always to be doing, but given the freedom to go about work at any pace. No deadlines.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Full responsibility to carry out the project in anyway that I desired. The project itself may not have carried much significance at this time due to the scoping nature of the project.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Highly relevant degree skills were used such as computer modelling, lab work and data analysis.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was very relaxed with occasionall non-work chatter, colleagues were motivated by their work and desire to further knowledge.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Organisation prior to the placement starting was poor. Start dates, salaries and further information were not told until almost 6 months after the confirmation of the placement. Organisation after starting was good.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was given the freedom to focus on aspects of the project that were of particular interest to me and my development. Encouraged to see other parts of the business and talk to graduates and other people of interest.

  • I intend to apply for the graduate scheme after exploring the nature of them whilst on placement.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, there were 17 summer students who regularly met up for social eevents

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Housing is average, cost of living and socialising is pretty cheap (Macclesfield)

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Macclesfield is better than expected, Manchester 20 minutes on the train is great.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, I played football, cricket and did other activities.
