The Role
There were times when i found the job very quiet which was boring but overall it was very enjoyable due to the friendly team i worked with and satisfied guests.
All of our team got on well and worked very well together when dealing with problems. I also felt our manager was very encouraging and motivating.
They were always keen to listen to my opinions and if i asked to work in certain areas to meet adademic goals they were very helpful.
there were times when we were really quiet and then really busy but i think this would be the case in any resort hotel due to the nature of the business being primarily leisure.
at the start i didnt have much responsibility as they were trying to ease me in gently to a new job which i was not familiar with but by the end i was doing shifts on my own and trusted to make decisions without my manager.
working abroad was very helpful in increasing my confidence which will help me in my future career. in terms of improving decision making skills, the job was beneficial however i didn't get to work in many other areas which may have improved my understanding of the hospitality industry.
The Company
as mentioned before, everyone got on really well and made it a fun working environment.
it was very well organised. We had a welcome BBQ for the interns the day after we arrived to meet all the management. then training began the following day. this started as training for all departments and then we did training individually with our departments. we also had help with getting our social security numbers and getting to know the area.
as the placement was only 6 months and the company recruits new people every season there wasn't really any additional training offered.
International Travel
i would love to work there again but due to visa restrictions this probably wouldn't be possible. i also found that the area was really good for 6 months but may get boring as there wasn't much to do and you need a ar to get everywhere.
The Culture
there were 11 interns who all lived on the ranch for the 6 months so we all became very good friends and did alot together. the ranch also arranged nights out bowling and to the cinema for us.
it was reasonably cheap compared with the UK.
The nightlife was quite low key. there were a few bars in Palm Springs but they were mainly for older people and you needed a car to get to the few clubs nearby. there were lots of nice restaurants though.
the only activities were those mentioned above- bowling, cinema but because it was quite a small workforce there weren't any sports teams or anything like that.
