About You
Very helpful in understanding the how the investment banking world works.
We were provided with a badge and an internal email address, so I felt like any other employee of the firm. Moreover, people on the trading floor were very open and welcoming despite the work they had to do.
I spent a lot of time on the trading floor going from desk to desk. Each person I went to taught me something about their job so it was very insightful.
I study finance so everything I learnt in the securities division kind of relates to what I study and therefore was very helpful for me.
The Company
The insight was pretty well structured. We had meetings, some work shadowing and networking sessions. But on the meantime we also had free time to go and meet employees of the bank to ask them a lot of questions.
I was very surprised to see that the atmosphere in my division (securities) was very good. I was expecting a lot of competition but people were very friendly and helping each other a lot which I found very cool.
I talked a lot to traders and sales people, I saw them coming in and out of the office so I think that I have a pretty good idea of what a full time job at GS would be like. Although it could be very different from on desk to another
The company is very focused on diversity, teamwork and doing the right thing. We had several talks by senior people of the bank and it kept coming back. I was very surprised to see the number of different nationalities that were present on the trading floor. Furthermore, everyone sends its findings and research to everyone, even interns. I think that culture of sharing is great.
Coming in I was about 70% sure that I wanted to work in sales and I preferred the commodities desk. But after seeing so many desks and people it liked a lot of desks and I had a different view on trading. Now I am very undecided about my choice.
Everything Else
There were plenty of opportunities to network with employees. There were networking events. A Buddy system was set in place and we could just go to people on their desk and if they were not busy they were happy to have a chat with us.
There were a lot of networking events and we could meet very different people.
I would definitely recommend the internship to anyone who is interested in finance and banking in particular.
