About You
It was extremely enjoyable as I learnt a lot, although it was very intense.
The firm has many employees and so trying to be valued when it is your first two weeks working in banking is difficult.
I received a lot of guidance, as our HCM team leaders were always on hand, be it in the room or with an email.
It hasn't assisted my degree as I study Maths & Economics so do not have any finance modules. However it has helped me with regards to life after university.
The Company
It seemed that every minute was organised, even free time for networking.
There was a buzz amongst the interns, and it seemed all the employees knew the interns were there and interested in how the insight was going.
They invested a lot of time into training with talks from many different professionals so that we got a rounded experience. There were presentations ranging from personal brand to interview skills which will massively help in the future.
Extremely so! With the many different ways of learning about the departments, from work shadowing to presentations, I feel it was the most that could be done in the space of 2 weeks, having had no prior knowledge. Obviously, we can't jump straight in but it did give a good insight.
The company culture was mentioned throughout the two weeks. The employees of Goldman Sachs really emphasized how important the business principles are and it highlighted how the company's culture is key.
It was extremely valuable and eye-opening, finding out about what each division does and whether it would suit me. Although the talks were long, I feel if they were much shorter then then not all the information would have been conveyed.
Everything Else
I was paid £400 per week, although this was emergency taxed. It was paid onto a a cash passport where as I would've preferred a bank transfer. The expenses were reimbursed although travel around London is not, so I walked rather than getting a tube.
There was some time for networking, however the free time for follow up coffees was limited because of the busy schedule. It seemed other divisions got more networking opportunities which seemed more enjoyable, such as quizzes, so it would have been nice for these to be for everyone.
The ones we had were enjoyable, always providing food and drinks and many people to talk to. The length of time was about right because you had enough to talk to a few people in depth but not for too long that you ran out of questions.
Yes, we found out that every employee has one day off a year for voluntary work which the summer interns get involved with as well. We also were given a tour of the building so we could see where people went to get a break from work.
Definitely! Goldman Sachs is such a renowned firm and they lived up to their name. It was extremely enjoyable, whilst being insightful and professional. I learnt a lot about the firm and myself, where I want to go with my career after uni.
