The Role
I enjoyed my internship very much. It was a very valuable experience where I really got a feel for the firm's culture. I gained a broad understanding of the firm's structure, and a clear insight into the division and the subdivision that I was interning at. The team that I was interning with and the neighbouring teams were all very kind, supportive and willing to spend time to talk to me.
I was treated like a member of the team. My buddy and my colleagues were all very inclusive and caring of my progresses, my opinions and my satisfaction with what I was working on and learning every week. They trusted me with responsibilities early on and would always give me honest feedback on what I was doing well and what I could work on to improve.
My manager was a great mentor to me. He always gave me positive energy to do my best and was also helping me through my internship by condensing my aims. I always felt comfortable letting him know when I was struggling. We met up weekly to stay on track and align our expectations and evaluate my progress.
I worked an average of about 10 hours. My day-to-day work was the start of the workflow for my team every day. I was able to start my work the previous afternoon and finish it off first thing in the morning. Midday I would work on my side projects. In the afternoons I was freer to do some shadowing and sometimes had to attend intern events or meetings.
I requested and was given both day-to-day responsibility and side projects to work on. I had responsibility for the timeliness and accuracy of my work as it could have direct impact on the team’s daily production. I was also trusted to carry out independent projects and present to my direct and senior managers. As an intern, I was given responsibility early on.
The soft skills, people skills, excel skills and time management that I developed during my internship have really helped me organise myself in my final year of studies.
The Company
The atmosphere in our office was extremely friendly, there is a lot of communication. Different teams would come together and socialise, there was constant snacks that everyone would share. People would have nice coffee chats and catch up with each other.
Overall, the structure of the internship was good, we had a variety of work and projects, met different people across different teams and areas which made the experience quite interactive and enjoyable.
I was surprised by the amount of training and development invested in us as interns. The amount of focus from my team, managers and senior managers were amazing. I learnt a lot from different people. The people are the most valuable assets of the firm.
