    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement was a great opportunity I got to do loads of extra training and get a feel for working in a major corporation. I had a massive learning curve and got meet so many people in all the different areas of the company including finance, engineering and customer contact.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everybody was really amazing and willing to help out with anything, no job was too small and everybody was willing to answer any questions and explain any acronyms. We had team meetings where everybody got share their work and intern days where all the interns got to share experiences from different fields and had talks from different heads of department.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a lot of support from my manager as we spoke every week about my goals the tasks I had been set and any training or opportunities that i wanted to take. I also had a buddy in my team who I could ask for any help day to day; and the talent team kept in contact and helped us organise intern days.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • On a daily basis i was pretty busy I did a lot of research, i had meetings and video conferences. I also got to go out on quite a few off-site trips to see the research in action, which was great. My manager and I kept in contact and made sure that I had a suitable amount of work and as my knowledge grew I could take on more.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given quite a lot of responsibility including being in charge of the departments community page which I set up and contributed towards. I was also part of quite a few cross departmental teams and set up a lot of meetings and shared my research and findings with the rest of the team at team meetings.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was able to do my stakeholder management training and was able to learn to use WebEx and SharePoint. I also was able to use the online learning system to revise for the PRINCE2 exam which they generously offered to pay for even though it wasn't part of the internship to help with my university course.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was a very open office and everybody was very friendly and would stop by your desk to say hi. Each team would sit together but there were free desks for visitors and comfy places to have a tea break. Offices are only used for meeting or a place to get have a quiet phone call.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • They were very organised we had a two day induction, telling us all about virgin media and their parent company. The kept us well informed about what was going on and had regular meetings to catch up and sort out any problems that may have arrived. I had contact with my manager before I started and they took care of all of the paperwork required from the university.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company were very invested in my personal training and development and made sure that I got something out of the placement too. I completed my stakeholder management training, the foundation PRINCE2 course and Exam and I also attended a two day leadership programme as well as using there online learning centre to improve my excel and word skills.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing as Virgin media as a company is very welcoming with lots of perks and bonuses as well as being an amazing opportunity to work within a large corporation and meet loads of people within a wide range of Fields. It has a lot of opportunities for you to grow inside the company as they are creating new opportunities every day.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes most of the placement students ate lunch together as we all got to know each other quite well during the first two induction days and some of them even got flats together by communicating over the Facebook community. We did a couple of volunteering days as well as an intern group and any event or team meeting always had a social meal.
