The Role
I really enjoyed my time in Goldman Sachs. I met incredibly smart people who were very willing to help. The environmemt offers a lot of opportunities for learning so I learned so much not only about technologies but also about how to act in a professional environment. I had a lot of responsibility from the beginning which put me in the spot.
I had an amazing team and they really made me feel welcome from the very beginning. I think my team tried to get the best out of me, always encouraging me to take new challenges and voice my opinions in meetings. Everytime I had any issues or I was struggling with something, they have always helped me and offered me the best ground for my development.
My manager had weekly catch ups with me to ensure that my internship experience was going well. I think it helped me not only to feel comfortable in the team, but also to get a better understanding of the company and its divisions. Project supervisor was also very willing and ready to help, showing at the same appreciation for the work I was doing.
I consider the amount of work just right. I worked 8 hours a day with a balanced amount of work. As I wasn't pushed to do specific things in specific days, I could choose what I worked on and the pace, as long as the deadline was met in the end. There might be busier day when something happens but they are not stressful and everyone will always still have time for an hour lunch.
I believe i was given a surprisingly amount of responsibility.I was assigned to a brand new project so I was involved from the very beginning, not only in planning but also in design decisions. I was encouraged to voice my ideas and opinions. Also I was told to do things the way I think they should be because they were considering I had enough experience to handle the project by myself and only to check from time to time with more experienced programmers,
A lot of knowledge from university was enhanced while working here, and I believe that it will help me a lot not only om my final year of university but further as well. I think that i became a much better programmer and that it helped me see things from a different perspective as real work projects present a different degree of difficulty and criticality.
The Company
The office is open plan which makes it a more relaxed and collaborative space. Everyone in the office was quite relaxed, joking and playing sometimes because that was a nice break. People can easily go to each others desks and ask questions, everyone being very willing to answer. Also we had oing pomg tables for those willing to have a more sporty break. We had people bringing cakes or sharing holiday experiences which made me feel like in a big family.
The placement was very well organised and everyone was very well informed about everything
The company invested a lot in training and development. The human resources department had a very organised schedule for everything and we were exposed to almost all divisions in the firm. We had training sessio s not only for technical skills but also for soft skills which are critical in such a company. Moreover, we had many presentations given by senior management in the firm which helped us understand much more about the company and a career path that we can follow within it.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I believe that it is very appealing. I decided to accept the offer to come back because i felt like I belonged there during this internship. Not only that I learned a lot but also met lots of amazing people. I consider that the continuous training opportunities that the firm offers are very attractive especially at this stage in my career where I will still want to learn even in a permanent job. Moreover, the benefits are great and as a woman I considered the flexible working hour very attractive.
The Culture
Given the large number of interns in the firm, it is impossible not to make friends over the internship. We socialised a lot and tried to meet each other because we were all in the same position but in different teams so we could learn from each other. Additionally the company organised various networking events to help us with this. We had a lot of fun this summer and i believe this contributed a lot to my great experience.
It is quite expensive to live and socialise in London. A good rent can be around 1000£ and a beer usually 5£ in a nice pub.
I don't know about the nightlife as I haven't been to a club. We mostly spent time in pubs till late which are always full till closing time, everyone being very happy to spend time with some friends in a oub after work.
I believe that London is one of the best places to have an internship in. Lots might say it is expensive but we had a salary over the summer to afford having fun. There are so many things to do in London. It is not only full of attractions but also events and markets and concerts, especially during the summer. Moreover, its diversity brought so much more interesting places to eat in there which offers you a great experience,
